Role: Sr. SDET Engineer/Automation Engineer
Location: Hybrid | 3x/week in Chicago
Job Description:
Ideal Candidate Profile:
· Senior SDET/Test Automation Architect with proven experience building enterprise test automation frameworks from the ground up.
· Hands-on with Playwright, Selenium, and Postman for UI, API, and end-to-end test automation.
· Strong programming/scripting in C#, Python, and TypeScript.
· Strong Azure DevOps experience (pipelines, CI/CD integration, workflow customization).
· Experience testing infrastructure/platform engineering: OS imaging, patching, configuration management, or deployment processes.
Overview:
We are seeking a senior SDET to modernize test automation for our client's infrastructure operations. This hands-on role owns test architecture and standardized automation frameworks that improve the reliability and consistency of infrastructure provisioning, configuration, patching, and deployment.
The ideal candidate combines software engineering, test automation, and infrastructure/architecture experience, including automating validation of new system images, OS patches, and infrastructure changes to ensure updates deploy safely and consistently across environments. The role also uses AI tools, including Microsoft Copilot, to build agents that improve efficiency and reduce manual effort, and involves customizing Azure DevOps and building CI/CD integrations in partnership with infrastructure, engineering, architecture, security, and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities:
· Design and implement the test automation architecture supporting infrastructure operations, image management, OS patching, configuration changes, and deployment processes.
· Develop scalable, reusable, standardized automation frameworks adoptable across infrastructure and engineering teams.
· Build automated tests validating new system images, OS updates, patches, configurations, and infrastructure changes pre-deployment, including regression, integration, API, functional, and end-to-end coverage.
· Establish standards, patterns, governance, and best practices for test automation and quality engineering.
· Provide architectural guidance while remaining hands-on with development, testing, troubleshooting, and implementation.
· Customize and extend Azure DevOps for infrastructure workflows, automated testing, release management, reporting, and traceability.
· Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines integrating automated testing throughout the infrastructure delivery lifecycle.
· Leverage Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools to build agents supporting testing, validation, documentation, and troubleshooting; identify further opportunities to apply AI to reduce manual work.
· Build automated UI/browser tests (Playwright, Selenium) and API tests (Postman); develop test utilities and frameworks in C#, Python, and TypeScript.
· Integrate automated tests and quality gates with Azure DevOps, GitHub, and deployment pipelines.
· Partner with infrastructure engineers, platform teams, developers, architects, security, and operations to define testing requirements and acceptance criteria.
· Analyze failures, troubleshoot complex issues, identify root causes, and recommend sustainable fixes.
· Establish metrics and reporting on automation coverage, test effectiveness, release quality, and operational risk.
· Mentor team members as the group grows; promote automation standards and quality-first practices.
Required Qualifications:
· Extensive experience as an SDET, Test Automation Architect, Quality Engineer, or similar senior technical role, with strong hands-on development and automation experience.
· Demonstrated experience building enterprise test automation frameworks from the ground up, including automation standards and reusable patterns.
· Experience testing infrastructure, platform engineering, OS imaging, patching, configuration management, or deployment processes.
· Strong programming/scripting in C#, Python, and TypeScript.
· Advanced experience customizing Azure DevOps — pipelines, boards, repos, test management, reporting, workflow automation.
· Strong experience with Microsoft Azure and cloud infrastructure environments.
· Experience developing and integrating CI/CD pipelines.
· Hands-on experience with Playwright, Selenium, Postman, GitHub, and Azure DevOps.
· Experience building automated API, integration, regression, functional, and end-to-end testing solutions, integrated into build/release/deployment pipelines.
· Strong understanding of Git-based workflows: branching strategies, pull requests, code review.
· Ability to apply software engineering principles to test automation (modularity, maintainability, version control, documentation, code quality).
· Ability to evaluate complex systems from both architectural and hands-on engineering perspectives.
· Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and root-cause analysis skills.
· Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience using Microsoft Copilot to support engineering, infrastructure, testing, or operational workflows.
· Experience designing or developing AI agents, copilots, or AI-assisted automation solutions.
· Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code, configuration management, or automated image-building tools.
· Experience supporting Windows or Linux OS imaging and patch-management processes.
· Experience with cloud platform engineering, SRE, DevOps, or infrastructure automation.
· Familiarity with containerization, virtual machines, cloud images, or enterprise endpoint/server management.
· Experience implementing automated quality gates, policy enforcement, security validation, or compliance testing in CI/CD.
· Experience in a large, complex, or regulated enterprise environment.
