Ofcourse, the range of instruments usually exceeds the lines of the staff. To write notes below or above the staff, we use ledger lines. These are short horizontal lines written through or below the circle of the note.

A clef symbol appears on the far left side of the staff. It indicates which note falls on which line. The range of your instrument determines the clef you use so that the notes are in the right places.

The first is the key signature. It tells you how many sharps or flats are in the music. If a sharp or flat appears in the key signature, it will not appear in notes. If the composer adds an extra sharp or flat beyond the key signature, they write it next to the notes.

The time signature is to the right of the key signature, just before the actual notes appear. This indicates the division of rhythm in the song, alongside the bar lines, which create vertical divisions along the horizontal staff lines to group the notes according to rhythm value.

The top number of the time signature is the number of beats per bar. The bottom number of the time signature is the type of beat (half note, quarter note, eighth note). You can read more about time signatures in our blog post How to Play Music in 4/4.

The most basic notes to learn on piano are the white keys. These keys are labeled: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. The middle of the piano is the note C, so it may be helpful to think of the notes in this order: C, D, E, F, G, A, B.

When it comes to playing the piano, pianists have thousands of chords to select from, with some chords being more popular than others. Check out some of the most common chords in the piano chord chart below, or keep reading to find out more about piano chords.

All piano chords contain a root note -- this is the note the chord is named after -- as well as one or more additional notes. Basic piano chords often consist of only two or three notes, while the more advanced chords tend to incorporate even more notes.

The most common type of keyboard or piano chord is a triad, or three-note chord. A triad contains a root note and two other notes, most often the notes that produce the intervals of a third and fifth above the root note.

One way to get the basic shape of a triad is to place your thumb and fingers on adjacent white keys and push down with your thumb, middle finger, and pinky. Learning this technique will set you up to play various basic piano chords with ease.

Piano notes follow a pattern of black and white keys, with a group of two black keys close together followed by a group of three black keys close together. This pattern repeats across the keyboard, and we use it to identify the notes.

Minor chords, like major chords, contain three basic keyboard notes: a root note, a third, and a fifth. To play a minor chord, select any root note, then count three half-steps up to the third. From the third, count two whole-steps (or four half steps) to find the fifth.

I should note here that not everyone learns this way. In some countries, especially in Asia, they use a the sol-fa method. I did not learn this way and am less familiar with it but you can check it out there if you're curious.

There are a few helpful tricks when memorizing keys on the piano keyboard. Notice that the keys on the keyboard are arranged in certain patterns. There are groups of three black keys and groups of two black keys. If you look from right to left on the piano keyboard, you will notice that the pattern goes: 3 black keys, 2 black keys, 3 black keys, 2 black keys, and so on. At the very left of the keyboard is one lone black key, which (if it followed the pattern) would have been part of a group of 3, but for some reason is all by itself.

How can a beginner read piano notes? To understand sheet music and how to play it on the piano, you must first understand the musical alphabet. The musical alphabet is exactly the same as the English alphabet, but only uses the first seven letters: ABCDEFG. Once you get to G, it begins over at A again.

There are two sets of five lines that you will notice on piano sheet music. Each set of five lines is called a staff. These two staffs can be joined by a brace, creating a grand staff. At the left side of the top staff, you will notice a treble clef, which tells the musician that the right hand will mostly be playing above middle C. You will also notice a bass clef at the left side of the bottom staff, which tells the musician that the left hand will mostly be playing below middle C.

Following the clefs, you will notice a group of sharps or flats, which are called the key signature. The key signature tells the performer which key they will be playing in: C major (no sharps/flats), G major (one sharp), F major (one flat), etc.

Following either the clefs or the key signature are two numbers, such as 4/4, 3/4, or 2/4. These numbers are called the time signature. The time signature tells the performer how many beats are in each measure and what kind of note equals a single beat.

The staff is designed to correspond to the musical alphabet. If the notes on the staff are stepping up, the names of the notes are moving forward in alphabetical order. If the notes of the staff are stepping down, the note names are moving backwards in reverse alphabetical order.
