Hi Everyone,

Just starting to get into reprap. I'm awaiting a printrbot from
Kickstarter, and am starting to design something on my own.
San Diego is a long drive for me, unfortunately. Are there any
reprappers in the Pasadena area?
Does anyone know of a good local source for filament in greater LA?

-Sam

There are a couple of Makerbots at Crash Space in Culver City, and a bunch of us bring our Repraps and other printers to their Makerbot Monthly event, including the Reprap Wallace that I designed (the design started as a Printrbot clone). This month, Makerbot Monthly is on the 19th. http://blog.crashspace.org/events/

Cool! Nice to know the designer of the Wallace is local!
I was just reading up on your design and watching your videos last
night.
I'll definitely try to make it to the Makerbot Monthly.

Hi Sam.  I'm going to be at the El Monte Airport Hobby Shop on Sunday, helping with a RepRap build, if you want to stop by.  If you want to get plastic, you should try 3dprinterstuff.com.  There is nothing local, at least nothing cheaper.  I do have a 5lbs spool or two of PLA I could sell you.

Actually, if you check the Makerbot list , the longest thread I've seen there is nothing but complaints about the quality of 3dprinterstuff's plastic (and customer service, or lack thereof). I bought a spool of it myself and it was the worst I've ever used. Makerbot sells pretty good stuff, and I've heard a few good things about protoparadigm (they're new, but they had a great post about quality that shows they at least know what to look for when sourcing it and doing QC), but my favorite for quality and price is still Ultimachine.

I use 3dprinterstuff all the time, and I've recommended them to many people.  I've never been disappointed.

I do know that when they first went into business, they went through several formulation issues with their supplier, and I am sure a lot of bad rep came from that.

Makerbot plastics are nice, but pound for pound, more expensive.  I think for $48 you get a little over 2lbs there, not including shipping.

Ultimachine has some of the best customer service I've seen.  I've tried their ABS and PLA, with no complaints.  The color selection is very limited, and when they run out, it's out for a while.

I am in Temple City but my reprap is still in pieces. I finish
soldering the electronics but is stuck on building the mechanical
part. . . that was over a year ago. Do you want to work building the
repraps together?

thanks,

John
