I'm dusting off my old CNC project. I'm hoping to make something that
can function as a repstrap and also mill & drill PCBs. I'd like to
reliably make features down to 10 mil. Consequently, I shouldn't need to
apply much force to the cutting tool, but I do need it to be accurate
and precise.

Also, I'd like to make use of the parts I have on hand. I have a bunch
of skate bearings and MDF from my previous, partially completed
buildyourcnc.com flavored machine.

What have been people's experiences in building machines so far? The
most difficult bit seems to be the linear motion. I thought about a
system similar to the McWire, but I see on the reprap site it's now
classified as a "death march" with really no explanation of why.

Otherwise, has anyone suggestions on making good linear motion with
skate bearings, or have in mind another way for less than $50 or so?

I also started my journey by creating a McWire variant, but in the end I didn't like it very much so I moved over to the reprap project.  Not much of my McWire made it into my repstrap I did reuse the bearings and made my system from a bunch of wood and things I found.  I did ended up buying the extruder and electronics from makerbot but the rest was not too expensive. The system works well, but still cost more than $50.00.  I figure now that I have a work model I can move up from there by building new parts and making improvements.  The liner motion is controlled in the same way a Mendel's is by having three bearings make contact on the control shaft and two other bears to control the rotation degrees of freedom.   I hope the image helps .
