See http://www.cgsy.com.au/?p=160 (Ben Coughlan)
He used wood. Interesting.

Looks a little bit like

Or is this something different again?

We were thinking of building one of these on the Gold Coast as we have access to a Laser Cutter. Also have option of printing on a MakerBot that a member has bought - but apparently this takes ages.

my god, 4 years without a single message and suddenly 2 in one day,
what is the world coming to?

I'm still pondering how to make one with 800mm X & Y ranges and 400mm Z

I think it's different:
From the pictures, it appears the Canberra person machined/worked from
single blocks of wood.

With a lasercut, you get a few flat slices for single component that
then need putting together for the 3D piece.
While entirely doable, James (pelrun) will tell you that that can be a
nuisance. There'll be a lot more nuts, bolts and washers going into
the effort, as he found with our acrylic lasercut Darwin. Being thin(-
ish) slices, they can also break, which both acrylic and wood will
happily do.

If doable, I think the Brisbane Darwin and Mendel could print the main
components for the GoldCoast Mendel.
There are some bits where lasercutting is fine, so for speed that
could be an option.

Cheers,
Arjen.

If you login online, you'll find more messages.

A Mendel RepRap has a large Y range, and could be built differently to
have a larger X range - the latter is just dependent on a structure
that doesn't warp otherwise your prints would get inaccurate.

However, the fundamental question would be: why would want to print
such huge single items... that actually makes little sense.
In terms of printing, it'll take a long time. If anything goes wrong,
the whole item becomes compost/junk.
Having multiple smaller components makes most sense, most of the time.

It's nice to ponder things in theory, but the real world ... so if you
tell what you had in mind, then perhaps we can help you resolve it.

Cheers,
Arjen.

There are two areas I had in mind to explore:
Making bodies for 1/5 scale R/C models
'Lumpy maps'

The real world sux, thats why I live in a multiverse of my own creation

Already asked about them printing - there is a big queue and we are way down the list.

Apparently laser cut is not too bad if you are using wood.

We have a member with a Makerbot - so might be able to try both methods.... would be an interesting learning experience - hedge our bets.

Apparently - mini-mendel is more doable from makerbot - but I like the laser cut one as it's using the real setup and you can swap out the wood an axis at a time as you print the parts.

Segments, not a single piece. There's no benefit to not segmenting
it... gluing segments together, or in effect melting them together, is
as good as the real thing.

Still needs to be built in little bits!

Arjen.
