Sorry you haven't heard much from me. Things move slowly in the
Education system. More a problem of getting all the interested
parties together in the same place at the same time.

I knew we had a small CNC machine but thought that it could only
handle balsa wood (used to make F1 racing car models) but ir seems
that it can mill ABS, Nylon and more (not metal). The upshot is that
we can make printed parts. I have given two STL files to one of the
teachers who will run an experimental job when he can source some
ABS. With school holidays about to start, it is likely to be a month
before I can give an update. It may be that this time frame is too
long for the group in which case, we will use the parts for our own
RepStrap machine.

The CNC machine is a little unsophisticated so the testing is needed
to find the best way of locking down the material to be milled and
then turning it over to complete the job. Something akin to the
moulding process. I will keep the group informed.

That sounds pretty good though, if you were able to mill one of each
part we could use those for moulding your RepRap as well as others.

HI Guys,
I have just had the bed laser cut on 12mm plywood. I do
have access to a laser machine
but they do charge for the time that it takes to laser cut. The bed
for example was laser cut in 3min
with a total cutting length of 2M. The cost for the ply works out at
$8 per bed with an $8 laser cutting
cost. Also there is a minimum charge of $30. So we would need to get
at least 2 for it to be worth
while. The first was free as a sample.

Thanks Matt (Woofy)

Wow,

This is great with so many options, how are we doing Arjen $ wise?

Can you give us a tally?

See my recent msg with quote from Vik about the lasercutting of
plywood and other materials.
He doesn't have it sorted out exactly, so I don't think we should be
spending money on it yet.
We could get some beds done this way, as it is actually intended to be
plywood or something similar.
However, you can do the bed manually also, it's not really that
complicated is it ;-)

Cheers,
Arjen.

I think I've got 300 so far.

Hi Arjen,
I do I agree with you on the fact that the bed isn't that
complicated to make
manually but it's so much easier to do it on the laser. I was
expecting that my boss
would hopefully give me some sort of employee discount. Maybe if he
wasn't an
accountant. The board that I used was 12mm "plywood" which I have been
lead to
believe must be good quality for the laser.

Thanks Matt.

PS I am spend time learning AOI. Oh and check out the blender website.
There is a
link to download a short 10min film made entirely on open source
software, Big Buck
Bunny. Very good. Has almost nothing to do with what we are working on
but well
worth the download.
