Hi guys,

I have looked into part printing and used some of there tools like
Arrkquote http://www.arrk.com.au/browse.asp?ContainerID=free3 to get
quotes for just the printable parts and they are coming in at over
$1,000. This is just for 1 copy of each part, not a fully working
parts list.

Given that
http://bitsfrombytes.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=91&category_id=5&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1
sell a full mechanical kit for $715 AU and link directly off the
RepRap page(credability) it is my suggestion we get these parts which
allows us including the electronics Arjen has orded to build a fully
working RedRap. Im happy to put in a few hundred to get the ball
rolling.

Open to other ideas/options?

Hi again,

On looking more into making parts out of wood i found this info on the
reprap site http://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/PlywoodRepRaps basically
they have a flat design that you glue together to make the parts
required. It is done using a laser cutter on 2 x P3 sheets of
technoply and 1 x P3 sheet of 9mm MDF. If any of you guys can get
access to a laser cutter that can accept .eps or .svg files then this
maybe a better/faster/cheeper option especially if we can do multiple
to get a few going quickly. There are a few issues which are
mentioned by VIc on the site so maybe Arjen can talk to him about how
feasible this scenario really is assuming we can get the cutting done
for nicks.

Hi Guys
I don't have the time to get involved in this at the moment, and it's
difficult for me to get to meetings.... but I am happy to donate $100
to get this important project kicked off if that helps. Hopefully I
will be able to get more involved later on.
Regards
Steve

Sounds like a very good idea to me, I'm happy to put in up to a couple
of hundred.

On the side I spoke to my brother yesterday (the one getting the cnc
machine) and he is very interested also, we'd be able to get parts
machined for cost of materials only, but that could still be a few
weeks off. Something to keep in mind though.

Haven't seen a real RepRap (rather than a repstrap model) done from
lasercut wood yet.
Vik was having some issues with thickness and precision, and he hasn't
got a working set from it yet.
It'd be cheaper for sure, but probably not faster as we'd be
trailblazing that particular approach.
The STL files are different as there's more bits to cut, and
differently, to put it all together.

Cheers,
Arjen.

Ok, so the offer from Adrian was similar in cost, really...

yes bitsfrombytes would be great - last I saw they weren't taking
orders coz they were redoing their kits, and so what you spotted was
the new kits and it seems they've just started taking orders again!
Looks great, and it includes steppers (they're expensive on their own,
like up to $60 - so that makes this kit good value) and they're using
cables rather than belts. Also it includes an extruder.

The one thing to note is that they've moved from moulded to lasercut
acrylic, so that means that we can build 1 working RepRap with this,
not use the parts as a template for moulds. The other RepRaps would
have to be extruded - at least one part of each in ABS and then we can
do our own moulds to bootstrap the others in AU.

I think this would be an excellent way to go. Since I've already put
in about AUD 300 for the electronics and such, if y'all can sort out
the funding for this, that'd be great ;-)
I'm ok with acting as a money conduit for the order and abusing my
credit card to order the stuff online.
Let me know if that's wanted, or if anyone else wants to do this part.
We probably want to be fairly quick, as otherwise bitsfrombytes will
be overloaded again and we'd be way down in the queue.

Cheers,
Arjen.

I'm happy to put $100 towards this right now.

Hi guys,

Looks like we have a way forward, Arjen can you maybe email your bank
details so we can all deposit some $, you mayas well be the order guy
as it sounds like your place is where the first action will happen.
How about we start with $100 each and c if we get enough. If we need
more we can donate more :)

Greg i would think it would also be nice along with getting a full
bitsfrombytes kit pursuing the idea of milling the printable bits
using your brothers machine, no reason we cant do both? That way we
can also start to source the other non printable components locally
and may even get it going around same time as the bitsfrombytes one.
Would be nice if we could become maybe the AU provider of printable
parts for faster seeding of other groups? If bitsfrombytes do become
overloaded surely we could setup a similar AU offering? At the end of
the day the best way to take this forward is to get it into the hand
of as many ppl as possible.

yes, good idea, I'll deposit $100 too, and more later if needed.

I'll put in the order with bitsfrombytes when I have close to the
amount.... so just get going ;-)
Do drop a note here when you've put in your bit, this will also nudge
the others.
Thanks

Cheers,
Arjen.

From Vic:

Sounds good. I've seen the sheet acrylic parts from Bitsfrombytes and
their extruder looks particularly nice.

I've just made another attempt at the Y/Z axes using lasercut MDF
sheet. I'm about to find out how much ot costs!
Damn. US$350 - more expensive than the plywood design! I'll try to get
Ian's acrylic design off him.
===

(Ian being bitsfrombytes).

Cheers,
Arjen.
