I figured I'd try to source one locally before ordering from abroad.

there's a lathe at hsbne I think, could have a crack at making your
own, or convincing some of the members to start making them

I've got a lathe here, just lazy to go through the ups and downs of
making one from scratch. It would probably cost me more to make one
than buy one after counting the numerous fails I'm sure to produce and
the time wasted.

And I shudder at the thought of trying to get a local source for
PEEK. I already have teflon rod.

Actually, my dad jumps at any chance to use his tools - he's already
rigged together some nichrome wire, teflon tape and a gas fitting with
a ~3mm hole through it. Just a nozzle and barrel and I have a custom
hotend.

That said, if I can't get my homebrew hotend to work I'm going to have
to purchase one, and I would purchase one anyway if the price was ok.

Check out http://wooden-mendel.blogspot.com/2011/07/experimental-makergear-hot-end.html
for a design that should work quite well. Remember, the important
features are a relatively short melt zone, a sharp thermal transition,
and no way for the heat to get up into your extruder body.

I've made plenty of nozzles and hot-ends etc,  in my day, and at least 6 of them have even been confirmed and installed into printers and printed successfully.   my most successful was a 0.6mm one in the HSBNE printer ( till recently)  and was used to produce three Sells mendels.

It's not even very hard to do, honestly.   I don't even have a lathe, I have a vertical milling machine ( like a sturdy drill press) that I ab-use slightly.   I'm sure I could do it with just a dill-press if I had to.   The hardest part is getting the depth of the 0.5 -0.3 mm hole "just right", and I usually do it by making two-three times more than I need, and selecting the one that "turns out best".     ( ie somewhere around 1/2 to 1 mm long, but no longer, and no shorter either).

I have however seen the light, and after seeing the nice consistent smooth filament with no curl that can be gotten from a CNC drilled one, Im in the process of removing my home-made hotend, and replacing it with a makergear one.   ( makergear or mendel-parts doesn't matter, they are both good ).

Buzz.

Although with mendel-parts you could be waiting up to 6 months for it to ship...

I got mine from Ultimachine, only took 7-9 days to get here from the states.  Picked up some of the harder to source parts as well from there.

I've been looking at getting a j-head. Comes in at ~65 delivered.
Think I'll persevere a little longer with my current set up and try
making one too.

Luke - I've got your PLA waiting here, when you coming around?
