to RepRap Brisbane
Hey there, me and a few co-workers are looking at buying/building a
reprap printer.
However we have a few concerns about the quality of the print and were
wondering if anyone in Brisbane would mind giving us a couple hours of
our time to scope our their reprap and the quality of the print.

It would be really super if someone could give us a demonstration
locally =)

If not, it would be super if you could just give us a few screenshots
and specs of your reprap and the models it has produced!

Hi,

The print quality of a reprap (or any hobby printer for that matter) can vary wildly. The 2 main things are to have a good, reliable frame (ie: doesn't vibrate too much, moves smoothly, etc.), and tuned settings.

There are a number of guys from the Hackerspace Brisbane ( http://hsbne.org/ )who have working Repraps. I personally am using a different hobby printer (but prepping to build a MendelMax).
If you're free on a Tuesday evening, you should come down to the hackerspace and have a chat with myself or the rest of the guys. We have a printer there, but I think it's a little out of whack at the moment. We've also got a number of printed objects of varying quality.

I'm planning to bring my printer into the space next Tueday (1 May). It's an Ultimaker (different printer, similar concept). You're more than welcome to come down and have a look/chat.

There's also the #reprap irc channel on freenode where you can get help and advice pretty quickly too.

Cheers,
-Joel

and

are fairly representative of what are considered 'high quality' prints for repraps.

fwiw, those were produced on https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OK21xiuRKmzwNGAu0hIUM9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0 using https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hq6v_oZ5fo3z6l42PHAAPtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0 electronics, just to demonstrate that you don't need a beautiful printer for high quality results.. There are plenty of corners you can cut, and a few that you absolutely must not cut :)

also check out
for some others' fine examples.

I'd show you my prints in person but I'm a couple hundred km south of brisbane. The HSBNE crew will look after you I'm sure!

After years of procrastination I've finally got motivated to start building my own.

I grabbed the M8 threaded rod, nuts and washers yesterday, "it ain't no big thing but its a gold star for me"[1]. Neither Bunnings nor Masters stock the M3 fastenings or the smooth rod so I'll have to find a source for them, preferably handy to Petrie.

What is the going rate for the plastic parts? Cash, slabs, ... ?

Where can I get the electronics and motors?

What are the maximum length, width & height for printed parts?

Are there any things I need to pay special attention to?

mick
