Lie detection

There was a fascinating piece in the NYT the other day on how to detect lies -- a growing field in law enforcement and elsewhere with obvious connections to reporting. Is anyone familiar with the research or have thoughts on how we might leverage it? I always thought Michael Kinsley's old theory that any politician that began a sentence with the phrase, "to tell the truth," was about to lie. I wonder if we could test it somehow.
