Repo init fails: EOF occurred in violation of protocol

Please help, I can't find any reference to above error while doing repo init. I tried 1.17 version of Repo as well as 1.18 version and i get same results...I could open https link in webbrowser and download clone.bundle. 

/temp/test/temp1$ repo init -u https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest

fatal: Cannot get https://gerrit.googlesource.com/git-repo/clone.bundle

fatal: error [Errno 8] _ssl.c:504: EOF occurred in violation of protocol

Do you need to use a proxy server? Is the proxy configured correctly?

No we are not using proxy server. We are behind firewall. Do we need ti change any settings? It is working fine from last 2 years.

This looks like your firewall or proxy isn't allowing the SSL
connection. You may need to check your configuration, repo relies on
the http_proxy and maybe also the https_proxy environment variables.
