Upgrade from Gerrit 3.8.1 to 3.9.4 - java 11 to java 17

Hey

We have server that is Gerrit 3.8.1 with Java 11 --> 

perkins-stg ~ % java --version
openjdk 11.0.18 2023-01-17 LTS
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (Red_Hat-11.0.18.0.10-1.el7_9) (build 11.0.18+10-LTS)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (Red_Hat-11.0.18.0.10-1.el7_9) (build 11.0.18+10-LTS, mixed mode, sharing)
perkins-stg ~ % which java
/bin/java
perkins-stg ~ % ls -ltr /bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Jan 30  2023 /bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java*
perkins-stg ~ % ls -ltr /etc/alternatives/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 65 Jan 30  2023 /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-11.0.18.0.10-1.el7_9.x86_64/bin/java*

Can we upgrade to java 17  with Gerrit 3.8.1 

Or  first need to upgrade to Gerrit 3.9.X  and just after i can upgrade to java 17 ?

I think 3.8 should work on Java 17. AFAIK the first release fully supporting Java 17 was 3.6,

Though 3.6 and 3.7 required this configuration on Java 17

This was fixed in 3.8.1 by https://gerrit-review.googlesource.com/c/gerrit/+/374575.

Looks like we should improve release notes by explicitly listing supported Java versions.

If you are on 3.8.1 you should update to the latest service release 3.8.5

I would prefer to upgrade java 11 -->17 (to our current version 3.8.1) - and we see that all works fine. 

then upgrade to 3.9.4 which is the last version of 3.9.X - right ?

yes, 3.9.4 is the latest 3.9 release.
