Are these really all the log entries? I would've expected to see
entries for when the first 61 gits are checked out.

Does it help to run a non-parallel sync ('repo sync -j1')?
Has Repo deadlocked itself or is it waiting for a Git command?
Looking at the pstree output might be helpful.

Not sure what you mean here -- are you running
repo sync -m default.xml
and getting a performance improvement? That would be very surprising.
