I'm a huge fan of the work that Pixel Film Studios does with it's Final Cut Pro X plugins and they continue to impress with each new release! I purchased an app from Pixel Film Studios a couple of years ago and ever since I've been "blessed" to get daily emails about their products! I don't really mind since they do such amazing work and so this morning I got my daily email from them with whatever effect or generator plugin they're pushing that day and was about to delete it, as usual, when I noticed the name. FCPX Colorist. Right away I was interested! I clicked on the "learn more" link, watched the video and was hooked! More about that later, but first some background as to why this got my attention!

By the time Final Cut Pro 7 landed in 2009 it had stolen so much of the market share when it came to editing that companies like Avid & Adobe were having to take notice and scramble to bolster their products. Apple came to a painful yet inevitable realization, FCP was the oldest supported app that they had. Almost everything else that Apple produced was built using Cocoa and could take full advantage of the newer 64 bit computing that they had moved toward! The problem with FCP is that it wasn't built in this new coding architecture so they had to seriously look at the options. Either keep it in it's current state and seriously limit the abilities of video editors forever or rebuild it from the ground up! They chose to rebuild it from the ground up and thank God they did! It's a fantastic and powerful NLE (non linear editor) and makes editing just about anything a joy! (In contrast, from what I've seen, Adobe and Avid both are still throwing patches on their products, but on top of the same old core code that they've used for decades!) Sadly it has taken a few years for Apple to get FCP X back up to snuff! Many of the features that we had come to know and love about legacy versions of FCP were suddenly missing from this new version and users left the product in droves! Personally (and this idea isn't original to me) I think Apple would have served themselves and the editing community far better if they had released the first version of FCP X as a beta and continued to support legacy versions of the app until FCP X was complete. That way we could see the direction they were heading in and get excited along with them for the new potential, instead it was like someone hit the brakes on every project we were working on or bidding for! With that said, Apple made massive leaps in fixing and adding many of the items that we were lost without! They also took seriously the need to come alongside the community of users and reassure them that weren't leaving them out in the cold.

Fast forward to today where FCP X 10.2.1 hit just this month and it's more robust and capable than ever! Here's where Pixel Film Studios starts to come into play. In the early days of the FCP X debacle editors such as myself couldn't do simple drop shadows on over-layed objects or even create simply 4 point garbage mattes! Enter the 3rd party developers like Pixel Film Studios who started to generate amazing plugins for us to use. In 2013 I was editing a feature length indie film shot on a RED Scarlet, and the DP and I were excited about color correcting the footage using the RED Raw footage. Once we got into working with the controls that FCP X had for RED Raw footage the DP lamented to me about how difficult and restricting they were compared to Adobe Premier's tools. Being an avid fan of FCP X (pun intended) I was sad to hear that, yet again, FCP X was coming up short. So today when i discover this amazing new plugin for color grading your footage, regardless of what it's shot on, I was totally in love with it. Now I'm not sure how these plugins work with RED Raw, but seeing as how the majority of what I shoot and edit with is DSLR or standard prosumer HD cams, I'm really excited to buy this set of color grading tools and give them a spin! I showed it to some of my more advanced students and they are ready to buy it as well, and re-color grade their short film just to see what the possibilities are! I'm planning to purchase as soon as I hit submit on this post!

Pixel Film Studios, kudos to you for looking ahead and giving us wonderful tools to help us as we work! For more information on Pixel Film Studios check out their website, pixelfilmstudios.com!
