Some time ago, I wrote a blog post about 'Becoming a Sales Affiliate for Scrivener' =98. This detailed how you could go about becoming a member of a virtual sales force for Scrivener, earning a 20% commission in the process. This method of getting a little something back as you spread news of Scrivener still exists, but what I wanted to cover today is bulk licence purchasing. This would typically be useful for a business or university.
We are fortunate that Scrivener is being adopted by numerous fields of practice, so we've tried to automate our web-store as much as possible in order to cater for most purchasing requirements. If you go to our web-store here you will notice a Volume Discounts Available link associated with all our Scrivener licence types. If you press the link, you will then be able to see that we offer pricing in discrete bands that depend on the number of licences being purchased in a single transaction. Taking Scrivener 2 for Mac OS X (Regular Licence) as an example, it is typically $45.00 for each licence, but if an institution were to purchase 51 licences then they would only cost $27.00 each.
Going the volume discount route and purchasing licences within a single transaction can obviously lead to a decent saving, but note the institution will only receive a single user name associated with a single serial number covering the number of Scrivener installation seats requested. It is therefore advisable that an institution name is used when going through the purchasing process. If you were purchasing on behalf of Stanford University, for example, using 'Stanford' as the 'User's First Name:' and 'University' as the 'User's Last Name:' would be advisable. If you were buying a number of licences for a particular department, perhaps the library, then 'Stanford' as the 'User's First Name:' and 'Library' as the 'User's Last Name:' would probably be a good way to go.
When buying in bulk, note that the number of licences purchased should equal the number of computers within your organisation. Volume discounts have been tiered to ensure good savings are provided when there are a large number of computers. For instance, if more than 250 licences are purchased within a single transaction, then you'll save 60% on the normal licence rate for Scrivener. If individuals within an organisation want personalised licensing for Scrivener, tied to their specific user name, then going the volume discount route is not possible. Licences tied to a single user name need to be purchased separately. Likewise, volume discounts are provided for organisations and institutions purchasing a multi-user licence, and are not intended for buying individual licences in bulk. For example, a group of PhD students should not band together to purchase licensing jointly.
Some institutions may be exempt from sales taxation. As there is no global database available detailing exempt universities or businesses, it is a limitation of the automated system that sales tax, if appropriate, will always be charged in the first instance. If you're organisation is exempt from taxation, the value can be rebated to your method of payment once you're in receipt of your STxxxxxxxx order confirmation. The order number is dispatched immediately to the given email address, and if you send this, along with your exemption certificate, to csfileattachmentATdigitalriverDOTcom then the sales tax portion of your order will be rebated to your method of payment.
The easiest methods of payment in our web-store are via credit card or a PayPal account, but if your order value is over $500.00 then the option to complete the transaction using a purchase order will open up. The company that run our web-store (eSellerate) manage the entire purchase order process. E-check (ACH) (U.S. only) and wire transfer are further payment options, with the wire transfer attracting a non-refundable banking fee.
I trust the above information will make the process of cleanly securing a bulk licence order for Scrivener easier to achieve. I hope any institutions that implement Scrivener into their workflows really benefit from the experience.

Thank you for your article. I tried to load a copy of my Scriviner to my work computer, in the hope of having a second safe place to save my projects to. The IT department said they won't allow me to install Scriviner, with the following explanation:
"I have attached the license agreement, which states that the software is only allowed to be used on your own personal computer, if you are installing it on your Work device you would then need an Institutional Licence.
This license agreement enables you and your family members to use the Software on your own respective computer"
How do I as a single user get my license updated to an 'institutional License' for the sake of being able to save my writing to a second computer which is only used by me but is situated at my place of work and belongs to them. My writing is personal, not work related, but this is the only second computer I have regular, daily access to which I can use in this way if the licensing agreement would allow it. I live alone and can't use any family members computers for this purpose.

I've been using Scrivener since 2007. Over the years, I've seen them improve to 2.0, and finally to their current version Scrivener 3. I've written both nonfiction and fiction books using it. Needless to say, I've seen what it can do, and what it can't. Where it has problems and where it shines. It's because of this, that I not only wrote this Scrivener review, but have worked to keep it updated since I first published it.
But, contrary what you might think, this won't be a fully happy review. Through all those years, Scrivener has barely improved, and based on its design is constantly limiting. So, be sure to check this review out and see whether or not this is the best book writing software for authors.

I first started using Scrivener back in 2007 when I was in the Navy working on my thesis. It was then that I found the usefulness of its organizational tools and structure, and assistance in long writing form to be helpful.
Since then, I've been writing books for over a decade and have used Scrivener for many of them. I've also spent HUNDREDS of dollars on courses to learn how to use Scrivener over the years (an issue I have with the program that I will discuss later).
Now that we understand what scrivener is, and what its price is, I'm going to start with my overall opinion on the software. Then under things I will breakdown the different features of scrivener so you can see which parts are most important to you.
It is because of this reason that mass majority of Scrivener users will export to word after writing it, and after working with their editor, will then upload the final version to a book formatting software.
Like a couple other writing tools, Scrivener comes packed with Composition Mode for distraction-free writing, which is a handy feature for me, as I need everything completely free of distractions to write.
All you see is the text and a customizable background image or texture. The default background is grey, but as you can see in the screenshot below, a calm rainy landscape is what really gets me in the mood to write.
To customize the background in Composition Mode, click Scrivener > Preferences > Appearance > Composition Mode.
Project Targets basically means you can set word count goals for your writing session, each week, or the entire life of the project. When you start a new project, perhaps you want to write 1,500 words every time you sit down to write. Project Targets automatically tracks your progress toward your overall goal. It resets itself each time you open it up for a new writing session.
A. Corkboard: All sub-documents are seen as index cards on a corkboard. Each index card can have a summary of that document, as well as custom colors and labels. This is great for visualizing, rearranging, finding gaps, and storyboarding. You can easily drag and drop and add or delete notecards.
B. Outliner: See sub-documents as rows of text, like an outline, and columns of other information, such as status or label. This is great for those who want to see the outline in a linear fashion. You can rearrange easily with drag and drop in this view, too.
If you do decide to get Scrivener, there are some Youtube videos out there that will show you how to get started and running. However, you'll quickly notice that many of the Youtubers doing those videos then sell you a full course on how to actually unlock the capability of the program.
If you are seriously looking at working Scrivener, then just be prepared to buy a course on using it. You can save yourself quite a bit of time and pain of figuring out all the features by learning from those who know the program inside and out.
I absolutely believe that Scrivener is a better word processor for writing books or large writing projects than both Word or Google Docs. It is a great writing tool, that will help with large writing projects such as academic papers, novels, and more.
However, while it has formatting tools, it isn't great at formatting. Instead, Scrivener users will export their work, work with their editor, and then re-upload their work to a formatting software like Atticus.
