The Mentalist is a popular crime drama series that follows Patrick Jane, a former psychic who works as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Jane uses his keen observation skills and mentalist tricks to help solve various crimes, while also pursuing his nemesis, the serial killer known as Red John.
The sixth season of The Mentalist premiered on September 29, 2013 and concluded on May 18, 2014. The season consisted of 22 episodes, with the first eight episodes focusing on the final confrontation between Jane and Red John. The rest of the season dealt with the aftermath of Red John's death and the transition of the CBI team to a new federal agency, the FBI.
The seventh episode of the sixth season, titled "The Great Red Dragon", aired on November 17, 2013. It was written by Daniel Cerone and directed by Elodie Keene. The episode marked a major turning point in the series, as it revealed the identity of Red John and showed Jane's final confrontation with him.
The episode begins with Jane waking up in a motel room, where he finds a DVD left by Red John. He plays it and sees a video of Red John taunting him and telling him to meet him at a chapel. Jane calls Lisbon and tells her that he knows who Red John is and where he is. He asks her to trust him and not to follow him. He then leaves the motel and drives to the chapel.
Meanwhile, Lisbon and the rest of the CBI team are investigating the murder of Bret Stiles, the leader of the cult-like organization Visualize. They find evidence that Stiles was killed by Red John, who also left his signature smiley face on a wall. They also discover that Stiles had a list of seven names in his possession, which are the same names that Jane had narrowed down as his suspects for Red John's identity. The names are: Gale Bertram, Ray Haffner, Reede Smith, Bob Kirkland, Brett Partridge, Thomas McAllister, and Sheriff McAllister.
Lisbon realizes that Jane has gone after Red John alone and decides to disobey his request and follow him. She calls Cho and tells him to track Jane's phone. She then calls Bertram, who is the director of the CBI, and tells him that they have a lead on Red John. Bertram tells her to meet him at the CBI headquarters.
Jane arrives at the chapel and enters it. He sees a man wearing a hooded robe sitting in a pew. He approaches him and pulls off his hood, revealing him to be Sheriff McAllister. Jane recognizes him as Red John and points a gun at him. McAllister admits that he is Red John and tells Jane that he has been playing with him for years. He says that he killed Jane's wife and daughter because they were happy and he wanted to take that away from him. He also says that he has a bomb strapped to his chest and that he can detonate it with a remote control.
Jane asks McAllister why he did all this, what his motive was. McAllister says that he doesn't have one, that he just likes killing people. He says that he is not insane, but rather enlightened. He says that he is the great red dragon, a reference to the novel by Thomas Harris, which features a serial killer who believes himself to be an incarnation of a mythical beast. He says that he has transcended humanity and become something more.
Jane tells McAllister that he is not a dragon, but a rat. He says that he is not afraid of him or his bomb. He says that he has come to kill him and end his reign of terror. He then shoots McAllister in the chest, causing him to drop the remote control. Jane picks it up and presses it, but nothing happens. He realizes that the bomb was fake and that McAllister was bluffing.
Jane then walks over to McAllister's body and checks his pulse. He confirms that he is dead and smiles in relief. He then hears sirens outside and sees Lisbon arriving with Cho and Rigsby. He runs out of the chapel and hugs Lisbon, telling her that he killed Red John.
