Hi peeps, can anyone help me out. i have edited a livery in gimp and when i come to save it i export as .dds with the fuselage name but, in x plane 11 it does not load. what am i doing wrong?? i've tried everything
I would have replied here, but I only saw your post in the shoutbox. It's easier to discuss this in an actual thread. Try to use dxtbmp. ( ) It's like an "intermediary" program- you load dds textures in it, send them to your editor, then reload/save them. I'm not sure why dds textures don't work if you don't save them with this program first, but when using it I never had an issue.
I used Gimp to create a new livery for DDenn's Challenger 300. I saved it as PNG and it worked perfectly fine. I've seen liveries for other planes that use PNGs as well, but I don't know whether this applies to all planes.
The .dds format has some parameters which causes GIMP .dds exports not to work with x-Plane. You can use .png files, but they are much more memory intensive and will lead to lower performance. I would save your Gimp file as a .png and then use the tool from the x-Plane developer's site to convert the .png into the proper .dds format. The tool can be downloaded at : -plane.com/tools/xptools/
Thesilverbullet was absolutely correct. as soon as i saved with them settings it was all good and they look great. i now have a uk registration. or at least i think i do. not really sure what all the letters mean but i believe 'G' is uk
Only for Windows users:
Go to the www.gimp.org website and search - quite a while - until you find the
Find the letter 'D' and click, then find DDS and click again.
Now notice that the plugin is only available for 32bit systems. Now decide whether you want to install the entire development suite and compile it for yourself, or
Download the 32bit version
Check for all sorts of malware
Extract from ZIP
Install.
Yada, Yada, Yada.
Thanks! I had in fact got to that page before, (can't recall via what route - these pages don't seem to like to be found; by me at least) and installed the plugin. But I see now that folks say it doesn't work with 64-bit systems (as you yourself indicate). So for Windows 7 x64, I can't use Gimp to edit dds files, it seems (??).
You do still need to select compression of BC1/DXT1 and tick the box to generate mipmaps - both in the the dialog box that pops up after you select export image and set the directory/filename (with .dds extension).
