I have a clay tile foundation and we were told to paint over it.  In a few years it looked like crap and still does.  Does anyone know of a type of wall board that can be furred out over it that won't cause a mold or mildew problem? Of course, my house has no drain tile or waterproofing.   Kris...@aol.com

P.S. There are lost mine shafts around Des Moines and they are VERY tempting to explore. But please don't go into mine shafts without breathing equipment or a canary. Odorless gas can overcome you and kill you in a matter of minutes. My family lost a young boy to mine shaft gas many years ago. (History buffs can look up the story in the old Des Moines newspapers from the early 1930s. His name was Jose "Joe" Muñoz from Valley Junction. Not to be confused with my uncle Joe Muñoz who still lives in Des Moines.)

Thanks to Steve for sharing that. It is an excellent article. Super accurate story and great publicity for rehabbers.

 

 Now for the Garver house, the tunnel is a coal mine shaft. I tried to buy that house in the early 1990s when it was still part of a nursing home complex that extended across the street to the North. I was told it was on top of a coal mine. I walked a way down the shaft until the realtor got really upset. I could not resist.
