I remember someone at the Market Street Co-Working project (on SE 4th) said there was a mysterious door in the basement that was probably a tunnel to another building. That building was once a linseed oil factory and a cabinet maker that also made coffins.-Kelli GriffisP.S. There are lost mine shafts around Des Moines and they are VERY tempting to explore. But please don't go into mine shafts without breathing equipment or a canary. Odorless gas can overcome you and kill you in a matter of minutes. My family lost a young boy to mine shaft gas many years ago. (History buffs can look up the story in the old Des Moines newspapers from the early 1930s. His name was Jose "Joe" Muñoz from Valley Junction. Not to be confused with my uncle Joe Muñoz who still lives in Des Moines.)

Thanks to Steve for sharing that. It is an excellent article. Super accurate story and great publicity for rehabbers. Now for the Garver house, the tunnel is a coal mine shaft. I tried to buy that house in the early 1990s when it was still part of a nursing home complex that extended across the street to the North. I was told it was on top of a coal mine. I walked a way down the shaft until the realtor got really upset. I could not resist.Marlon MormannThe information transmitted is intended for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material legally protected by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, 18 U.S.C.sec.2510-2521 and other state and federal laws. THANK YOU STEVE!--WHO13 did do a good job of telling the story. Hopefully this will keep those toiling away to stay inspired and get more interested. Some great buildings out there just looking for 'mentors'!

Last night, WHO13 aired a great report on renovating historic Des Moines homes - featuring several Des Moines Rehabbers Club members. They talked about the Drake neighborhood, River Bend, and Sherman Hill, showing some wonderful examples of people investing in their homes and neighborhoods.
