Hi Rehabbers!
We had a great meeting on Saturday! Thanks so much to Doug Bown for hosting! I'll get some pictures up on the website and the Facebook group soon.

I talked with several of you there about recommendations for local craftsmen for various jobs. I didn't take good enough notes to remember who suggested what, so I thought I'd recap what we discussed and hope that you'll email me back with the details so I can get them into the RenovateDSM.com recommended contractors list. Even if you're reading this and I didn't talk to you specifically, send me your recommendations! I have a need for all of these things and welcome any suggestions for who to hire!

There were three categories I discussed with different people:

Iron/metal workers who could possibly make a custom shower curtain ring for a clawfoot tub:
Someone mentioned Village Blacksmith in Valley Junction.

A woodworker in Des Moines who makes custom wood window sashes:
Possibly located somewhere on Maury east of E 14th? If you have more details, send them along!

Concrete/mason workers who can pour a set of concrete steps, reconstruct the brick around them, and tuckpoint the brick along the foundation:
Any suggestions that aren't already on the RenovateDSM.com list are welcome!

Thanks, guys. And sorry for my sketchy memory. Saturday was a busy day!

Kelli:

I am familar with two masonry companies that would do a bang up job on your stoop. Crose & Lemke and Atlas Masonry. Crose and Lemke can do both the masonry and concrete work on both older and newer home. Both companies are attentive to morter matching and cleaning the masonry or concrete after installation. Highly recommend.

On the woodworking, are you hoping to restore / match existing sashes?

As for the custom metalwork, what aesthetic or material are you hoping for the shower curtain ring??

Hey Chaden,
 Thanks for the masonry recommendations.

I don't need any sashes made for myself right now but the house we visited on Saturday had some new wooden sashes made in the old style and the homeowner couldn't remember the woodworker who'd made them for him. I was hoping someone else around town had heard of the same person because the only one most people knew was in Dubuque. Any ideas?

For the shower curtain ring I'm looking ideally for chrome or white enamel finish, but if those prove cost prohibitive, I'd settle for something generally silver colored. It's really more for function than anything. My husband is super frustrated with bumping into the shower curtain all the time while he's showering but none of the curtain rings we've found seem wide enough to go past the edge of the tub. I thought I'd just have one made to the right size. What I'm thinking would be the easiest and least expensive thing is something shaped kind of like a pound sign (#) that would fasten to the walls on three sides.

Kelli -

I am not aware of a woodworker off a Maury, so I can not help there. We have been discussing internally at Silent RIvers about making original sashes, as we have coincidentally been doing a whole plethera of sash repairs on various houses this past 16 months. Since we operate a cabinetry shop, building / matching sashes seemed in keeping with the woodworking we were already doing. I also recommend talking with or engagin Tim Reinders at Main Street Iowa. He recently returned from a conference on restoring older windows, and has much to share on discussions and research being done on reclaiming and restoring the craft of windows. He may also know of additional resources for Des Moines Rehabbers.

As for shower curtain, with the various finishes it's more complicated to customize, as the chroming or galvanizing could raise costs for what you are doing. Some additional ideas: use copper pipe and pipe standoffs from the ceiling to hand the ring. I did this one very successfully. If you want to have the silver look, perhaps using 3/4" conduit, bending it to fit? Nothing like an excuse to buy a new tool? Again, there are stand-offs that would work well here too.

There are many good metal fabricators in town, but likely hard to keep costs below doing it yourself with store bought materials, or perhaps buying a old fashioned ring at a plumbing supply store.

I hope that helps. :-)
