Hi,

I'm the Linux and Solaris System Administrator for the Dept. of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, working
out of the Carson City office on Third Street. Are there any other State employees here? I thought that if we were,
we might be able to support each other in spreading Linux. (Sound subversive, doesn't it?  )

No, but I'm actively looking for work as a Linux admin, if you're hiring!

Mark,

Linux employment with the State is pretty thin. I don't know of anyone who is hiring for Linux right now,
but it would either be the Governor's Office, or DETR, EITS (Enterprise IT Service), all in Carson City.
The chances are much better in private sector right now.

Places that come to mind that you should look include:

* IGT (International Gaming Technology)

A few years back IGT was bought by an Italian company that also handled lotteries and sports
book betting. The Italian company (I forget the name) had a server farm running Solaris and
support Oracle databases. The Oracle licensing finally reached their threshold of pain and they
decided to drop kick it all and move to Linux supporting MySQL. When it was completed they
expected to save something like $3 MILLION a YEAR on licensing.

This project is probably completed by now, but they would still need sys admins to help run it.

* Sierra Nevada Corporation

SNC is big in aerospace and government contracting for aircraft refurbishment and repair.
They are also working on their own version of the late NASA Orbiter (shuttle). Pretty slick.
Last time I looked at them, they were looking to find people with network management
experience. Linux + Networking might be a big help.

* The server farms in Fernley (Apple and somebody else)

Apple and some other company each have a server farm out off of Highway 80 near
Fernley (East of Reno). Last I heard, Apple is assembling their servers in Reno and
trucking them out to Fernely to the farm. I think that either they are running Linux or
some version of OS/X  (Berkeley Software Distribution of UNIX w/ some architectural changes).

I think Switch is out there too, but I'm not sure if they are the second or third server
farm in that area. I know Switch has a big presence in Las Vegas.

* The University of Nevada (maybe)

I heard from a co-worker that UNR uses Linux, but not sure how much. Working at
a University can be a sweet deal. I worked at UCSC for awhile, and it was better
than going there as a student! :D

Best of Luck! Let us know how it turns out.

Thank you, Jeff!  I'm just and app analyst still working on my RHCSA, so I don't imagine I would be able to get any sweet gigs like those, but figured it was worth asking.  I'll check them out.  Couldn't hurt.

Hi Jeff!   You succeeded me at DETR (I retired a few years ago).   Hope I didn't leave too much of a mess for you!  Still running Solaris as well?

Paul,

Yes, I started about a year after you retired. It would have been handy to have a short 2 or 3 page note explaining the lay of the land and special things to look for.
However, we figured out things as they became problems and I document things as I go. I worked as a developer on Solaris so becoming an admin on 11.3 was a bit of a shock. Most of my admin work was on Linux.
Things are running smoothly now, so it’s good.

I work for the RTC so we are a Regional not state but bigger than country.  Odd government entity size wise. I take care of our Linux servers and boxes as well as others. We are manly a Window shop but I do manage to squeeze in Linux when possible.

Here at DETR I manage about 100 Linux and Solaris systems. That’s about 80% virtual systems and 20% physical systems. It’s pretty evenly split between Red Hat Linux and Oracle Solaris. We have a bunch of guys caring for the Windows systems.

When I got there in 2004, they had Solaris 8 and were using insecure network shares, FTP and Telnet to access a lot fewer servers.... there were a lot of potential security issues.   My biggest issue over time was to tighten up those issues.  Solaris got much better at locking down things at installation time, so as we changed physical servers, installed virtual servers, and upgraded Solaris, I was able to improve the situation.  There were still some things I wanted to do, but I met resistance from supervision or budgets.

Updates to Solaris, Linux, networking, and database software were always tough to schedule.... but thats true in any computer center.

I also installed GoAnywhere software and a lot of the connections (special stuff for mainframe, thank you IBM).   User management became easier because of GoAnywhere (very few human users in Solaris & Linux).  I enabled the software firewall rules on GoAnywhere.
