I know people/offices/businesses sometimes upgrade their systems and the old components just end up in a stack being unused... So I thought I thought I would throw out a line and see what I catch:
I recently installed (And am still configuring...) FreeBSD on our home server, and am running ZFS.  I have read that ZFS is REALLY RAM hungry (Minimum of 2GB recommended by FreeBSD, I think I read that Sun recommended 8GB), so I salvaged all the RAM I could find around the house, and dedicated 6GB to the cause.   Unfortunately, that means my packet radio machine got left out in the cold, with a mere 512MB of PC2-5300.  Even Fedora is requiring 640MB for a graphical installation these days...  And while I'm sure Slackware or Gentoo won't complain...  They aren't known for being the most ham radio friendly distros around.   SO, I'm looking for an upgrade.  Has anyone got any PC2-5300 or compatible RAM wasting away?  I will happily take it off your hands ;)

I've got four 1GB PC2-3200R-333. I don't know much about memory compatibility. Will it work?

Did a bit of googling.. looks like not.. the R seems to be "Registered" memory, and requires a server motherboard/processor (or so says the net)

I'm not an expert on the subject either...   Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_memory, doesn't mention any special processor requirements, but it does imply that the memory controller needs to support it... However, a few quick glances around other sites on Google didn't seem to suggest any such requirement...So maybe all modern boards support it...   SO, I guess I will throw the general question out to the group:  Should registered RAM get the job done for me, or should I avoid it?

If nothing else, I figure I can give it a try and see if it works...   Worst case scenario, it just doesn't.

This is what is in there right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220066

So, 240 pins.

Well, you're welcome to it... I'd like it back if they don't work our for you. I'm down in Minden... hardly ever get to Reno. Are you ever down this way?
