Please plan to join us and forward our invitation (below) to your City Council, city staff, and to your Parks, Planning and Environment Commission members for our next South Metro Sustainability Roundtable Wed. Nov. 18 at the Dakota County Technical College (Dakota Room) for the 3pm staff workshop, or 6pm community roundtable. It will be a great chance for them to share ideas with peers from south metro communities. We will have updates on funding available for city energy improvements, bike and pedestrian improvements and community gardening projects. The event is free. Please RSVP if possible. Thanks!

Dear South Metro city staff and elected, appointed and citizen leaders,

 

Please join us for our next South Metro Sustainability Roundtable, on Wednesday November 18 at the Dakota County Technical College (Dakota Room) for south metro city staff, elected leaders and community volunteers to meet one another learn ways to make their communities more livable and sustainable including;

·         3pm workshop for city staff and elected leaders with updates on new money available for city energy efficiency projects, resources from Active Living Dakota County for cities to improve bike and pedestrian systems,  support from Gardening Matters for community gardens and how to support a Statewide Complete Streets Policy.

·         5pm networking reception featuring local, organic food from Valley Natural Foods  

·          6pm Community Roundtable for community volunteers to plan their next steps for helping residents and businesses save energy and money to increase biking and walking, expand community gardens, increase recycling and improve water quality.

·         7pm Community Gardening Workshop with gardening matters for community groups to access support and funding to develop more community gardening spaces and projects.

Reception/ Networking 5 to 6pm

Community Workshop – 6 to 8pm

Including: cities and townships in Dakota County, South Washington County, and Carver, Scott, Goodhue and Rice Counties,

  • Learn about your city’s sustainability efforts. Share best practices with adjacent cities. 
  • Meet staff, elected officials and citizen commissioners from other West Metro Communities

3 to 5pm

  • Welcome –President Ron Thomas – Overview of DCTC Green Campus Initiatives
  • Introductions – Sean Gosiewski, Alliance for Sustainability www.afors.org
  • Introduction to the new MN GreenStep Cities Program - Philipp Muessig, MPCA - overview of sustainability best practices www.mngreensteps.org 
  • New Money Available for City Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Projects – MN Office of Energy Security/ Center for Energy and Environment - Public Buildings Enhanced Energy Efficiency Program, Update on funding deadlines for Energy Efficiency Block Grants and cost share grants.
  • Active Living Dakota County/ Complete Streets – Kurt Chatfield, Dakota County Office of Planning, Dakota County will highlight tools and funding for cities to improve bike and pedestrian access on trails and streets and the Greenway Collaborative. Kathy Bodmer, City of Apple Valley, will highlight Apple Valley’s plans to integrate side walks with trails. Ethan Fawley, Fresh Energy, will explain how cities can support local and statewide Complete Streets Policies.
  • Huddle by Best Practice Areas – Questions and Answers, Sharing Best Practices – 30 minutes

·         City Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Projects –.south metro case studies of energy improvements for new and existing buildings, energy performance contracting, EECBG projects

·         Active Living/ Complete Streets city staff and city council members will share examples of integrating the needs of bikes and pedestrians into local street improvement projects.

 Reception/ Networking – for city staff, elected leaders and citizen leaders featuring local, organic food from Valley Natural Foods

How cities and citizens and support the proposed Statewide Complete Streets Policy Michelle Dibblee, Transit for Livable Communities.

7 to 8pm

 

  • Huddle by Best Practice AreasEnergy Conservation, Biking/ Walking, Water Quality, Recycling. Share ideas and next steps with other like minded volunteers – 30 minutes
  • Huddle by Community – meet other volunteers from your city to plan next steps – 30 minutes

7 to 9pm

 

Community Gardening Workshop with Gardening Matters

  • Learn how your community can access funding to develop more community gardening spaces.
