Ive been using a HP Officejet 3835 all in one printer for several months now wirelessly to a Windows 10 64-bit computer, and recently started to get error messages where my computer could not connect to the scanner. The printer still worked fine, but it couldn't find the scanner. Occasionally I manged to get it to work again by running the HP Print and Scan Doctor, but that didn't always work.
I then decided to do a fresh install of the HP drivers. So I removed all drivers and downloaded the new driver set from
123.hp.com as was directed in the printer setup manual. Doing it wirelessly, I chose the full package install option and went all the way through to where it says 'Setup now complete' and 'Please register'. Went through the registration again and then linked to my current HP account, and then tried to close the window, but it kept saying setup was not complete. I could see that everything was registered and linked to me, but there were no other options to install or finish anything.
The printer icon appeared to install into my Start menu ok, but now when I select it, it pops up with a window to launch devicesetup.exe, which then gives me a selection to either connect a new device, reconfigure wireless settings or add more software.
Checking my installed printers and I can see that the printer has been installed, and I can print to it from the computer, but I now have no way of launching the scanner from my computer. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers several times, switching the printer on and off and rebooting the computer each time, but each time I end up back in the same situation with this device setup launch, with no way of viewing or working the printer independently to check ink states or scan etc.
I then installed the HP Smart App, which did allow me to connect to the printer and scanner and everything works ok, but it only gives me very limited scanner functions. I can no longer scan double sided for example, and double sided scanning is an important function for me.
Thanks for the feedback. It looks like I've finally managed to sort it, but in a really complicated way. I ran the HP Doctor numerous times previously and it always came up with all greens at the end, but when I clicked the HP icon to start the printer, I always still had that devicesetup.exe loop.
I finally connected the printer via usb and reinstalled the software again, and everything (Printer, scanner etc) worked fine on the usb. But then when I tried to link to the printer wirelessly, I went through the process, it told me to disconnect the usb, and then I got stuck in the devicesetup loop again.
I then removed all the drivers again and downloaded and installed the scanner only software from the HP website. Then I ran the HP Doctor again, and it asked me to make the scan only version my default printer, and then downloaded the full HP printer driver package. It installed that and that now seems to have given me back the full functionality again of the printer and scanner.
Since the automatic firmware update to latest firmware last year the copy/scan function on my HP Officejet 3835 is no longer working. The copy/scan touchscreen functions no longer work and also initiating a scan from the PC fails. I have tried printer on 2 PCs and 1 Mac and have the same issue.
Check the scanner bar functionality: partially lift the scanner lid, and then press the Copy button or icon. If the scanner light does not illuminate or move across the glass then it should be a scanner issue.
This product worked fine until December 2020, when I began to get messages that software to use the scanner "this file can harm your computer." I'll skip the long story. I've spent an hour and a half today reading tech support messages. I've uninstalled the HP software using the recommended tool HPSMART for my Macbook Air. I turned everything off and on again. I've selected this computer on my mac. HP smart cannot seem to find my printer, despite triple checking that all cables are plugged in properly (both power and USB). The cables do not appear to be damaged. They are not that old, really.
I've already been on the phone to Apple support for almost an hour today. I was told it is HP's problem. HP says there are no drivers to download for this printer/scanner. I was told it "might not work" with the Big Sur update. But the problem began before I did the Big Sur update.
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
Hi - I've recently installed a HP OfficeJet 3835 and downloaded the HP Smart App. However the scan settings in the App are very basic compared to the advanced scan settings in the HP Solution Center software I had with my previous printer HP B110 Smartseries. Is there a way I can see and update advanced scan settings (eg change the scan default folder, scan to email etc)?
I've gone to the drivers page for this printer to see if this can help and under "Driver-product installation software" it tells me to add HP Smart ,which is confusing as I've already added it and can see the printer from it!
Then under "Software-Utility" it lists HP OfficeJet 3830 series Print and Scan Driver and Accessories version 40.11 dated Apr 24 2017 as available for download and is described as the "full solution software". Is this the driver needed to update advanced settings?
Many thanks for your help, TEJ1602 - I've downloaded the full version software from the link you supplied and I can now access and use the Advanced Scan Settings, but it's worth pointing out that these advanced options are available through the HP Printer Assistant shortcut created when installing the full software and not through the HP Smart App which only has the basic scan options.

I don't know if this printer has a bug in Windows 10. I am facing the same issue. Tried to reinstall the driver and reset the printer multiple times. But the problem still persists. Though the PC printing prints in color everytime I reinstall the drivers, until I plug in the USB cable to print wired.
I have exact same problem I went and bought another HP 3835 AS i NEEDED IT for my business, to my horror it was printing in colour and then just stopped!!! why does Hp not have a colour or black option on HP app?
now you off assistance in all this conveluted tasks. my worry is why would that change anything if i delete i off and reload? its no difference from before! it will print in colour for a few days and go back to black!! this is shocking for the size of HP worst is the advise given is totally stupid!!! HP need to sort this out I have HP new printers for my business and i am just going to return them. everyone person i spoke to has same problem!! you have an error on the 3835! it doeesnt matter how many times i delete and restart computer yes its prints colour but in a few hours its back to black!!! HP also have the worst customer care on earth!!! This is shocking!!!!!
And just a suggestion that HP Smart app offers very limited options on Windows. Avoid it! I recommend Printing everything from the inbuilt printing options of software packages, as they provide way more flexibility and options. Though everything should work fine as long as you select the right printer that we configured in printer options.
I faced the similar problem, the re installation would definitely help. But I would suggest if you are in hurry, you can use mobile app "HP Smart" to get the color print over Wi-FI and fix the issue of Windows color printing later.

How do I set the default to scan a full A4 page. Currently I have to follow the steps you have given and have to change the scan area of each page I have scanned. Currently when i scan 10 pages through ADF each page is scanning only a portion of the page. The portion that is scanned is random. Sometimes the bottom is cut off and other times it is scanning just a column in the middle of the page.
