MyDress-Up Darling was nothing short of a huge hit when the anime adaptation debuted in Winter 2022. Based on Shinichi Fukuda's beloved manga, Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru is a romance that also dives wholeheartedly into cosplay, a topic that precious few anime have explored beyond introducing it as a side character's passion.

Updated July 8, 2024 by Mark Sammut: My Dress-Up Darling season 2 is in the works, so it is only a matter of time before the wait ends and Marin is back on everyone's screens. Gojou is great too. At the moment, CloverWorks has not revealed when the sequel will air; consequently, fans looking to get their fix of romance and comedy will need to look elsewhere. Two more anime like Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru have been added to this article.

Anna Lindwassser has been a massive anime nerd since she was an elementary school student geeking out over Pokemon. She's currently watching One Piece for the first time, and her favorite anime character is Akito Sohma from Fruits Basket.

When she's not watching anime, she's writing lists about it - plus other fun stuff like Disney movies and weird animals. She drinks more tea than is probably legal and writes surreal fiction that she wishes she could turn into an anime.

Romance anime doesn't have to be sappy and sentimental to be enjoyable - actually, sometimes romance is all the more poignant when it also makes you laugh. That wonderful combination of emotions can be found in comedy-romance anime.

Which are the best anime rom-coms? That depends on your personal preferences. If you're tired of every romance anime being set in high school, you should check out Wotakoi and Recovery of an MMO Junkie, two stories about adults falling in love with hilarious results. Want something that's just plain bizarre? Try Arakawa Under the Bridge, an anime that's about a strange society of misfits living under the titular bridge. Want to watch something awesomely old school? Try Ouran High School Host Club - it's hard to find a better example of funny romance anime than that.

As the president and vice president of their elite high school, Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are two of the most highly respected students at their school. Naturally, many of their classmates see them as a perfect couple - and so do Kaguya and Miyuki, who each harbor a massive crush on the other. Both are completely unwilling to admit to their feelings, and they spend each episode trying to get the other to confess.

Each episode involves ridiculous attempts that range from trying to outwit each other at parlor games to refusing to admit they're carrying an umbrella in the hopes that the other person will offer theirs. It's one of the funniest anime of the winter 2019 season, but it's also hard not to root for Miyuki and Kaguya to get together.

Hori is known as one of the most popular girls at school due to her beauty and brains, but that seemingly perfect persona disappears when she's at home. In reality, she's a homebody who spends her time doing housework and taking care of her little brother. On the other hand, Miyamura is known at school for being a gloomy otaku nerd when his true identity is far from it - he's got numerous tattoos and earrings and is surprisingly good-looking. When Hori and Miyamura run into each other outside of school, they both agree to keep each other's true selves a secret from their classmates, and eventually grow closer as they learn more about their hidden personalities.

Part of the reason why Horimiya is such a popular series is its refreshing approach to the high school romance genre. Rather than being bogged down by overdramatic tropes, the story is quite simple and light-hearted. The colorful characters and hilarious situations they find themselves in make for an enjoyable, wholesome ride.

Misaki Ayuzawa is the student council president, and she takes her job seriously. That's because the loud and obnoxious boys at her school make life practically unbearable for the few girls, and she's dedicated to making sure that they get a fair shake at a decent education. But despite her insistence that everyone else follow the rules, Misaki is secretly breaking one of them by taking a job outside of school at a maid cafe.

When her sarcastic classmate Usui gets wind of her secret, he begins by just teasing her about it - but as the series progresses, the two start getting to know each other on a deeper level. This anime expertly combines humor with a unique relationship that progresses the way a real one might.

The only thing that Wakana Gojo wants out of life is to become a master hina doll craftsman. Sadly, he can't share his passion with others, because according to his peers boys shouldn't be doing things like that.

His isolated life comes to an end when he meets Marin Kitagawa. Marin is gorgeous and popular, but she's also a huge nerd who thinks that Gojo's crafting skills are amazing. Not only that, but she wants him to use them to help her cosplay.

Hachiman Hikigaya is a deeply pessimistic young man who firmly believes that all social relationships are doomed to failure and that the world is designed to make everyone as miserable as possible. When he writes an essay mocking the concept of friendship, his teacher assigns him to join the Volunteer Service Club, a club that forces him to actually help people - often with the social problems he so reviles. Through the club, he has to do everything from help his oblivious friend edit his terrible novel to try and stop a little girl from being bullied - and through it all, he's deepening his bonds with his fellow club mates, Yui and Yukino.

Hikigaya never actually gets into a relationship - he isn't ready for something like that. But his bonds with Yukino and Yui, as well as his obvious attraction to Totsuka, put this story firmly in the romance category. There are also plenty of moments that are devastatingly sad - like when Hikigaya's rock bottom self-esteem is revealed - but the funny moments overpower the pathos. It's one of the best anime to combine romance and comedy, and it's well worth a watch.

Chiyo Sakura finally gets up the nerve to ask out her crush Umetarou Nozaki. He doesn't turn her down exactly - but he also completely misinterprets her, believing instead that she's a fan of his shojo manga and wants to be his art assistant. As more of their classmates get roped into being manga assistants, more and more silly interactions and misunderstandings pile up. Some characters are spoofs on shojo tropes - the "prince" character is an attractive girl, whereas the "tough-guy" character cries at sad movies and really wants everyone to think he's cool.

Despite the focus on parodying shojo tropes and making jokes, the romantic tension between Chiyo and Nozaki is one of the key elements of the show - even if Nozaki is probably never going to catch on to Chiyo's feelings.

Madeline "Maddy" Smith is the main protagonist of the first two series. She is a fifteen year old girl who is attempting to conceal her true identity from the world. She is a tame Wolfblood (those who conceal their animalistic abilities from society).

Maddy inherited her Wolfblood genes from her parents, who are both also Wolfbloods. To keep their secrets, they live in a secluded country house. During her time in Stoneybridge, she has become close friends with Shannon Kelly and Tom Okanawe. These bonds begin to deteriorate when she meets Rhydian, a new Wolfblood in the area, and starts spending more time with him. At the conclusion of Series 2, Maddy left Stoneybridge with her family, seeking refuge in the wilds of Canada.

Maddy and her family (Daniel "Dan" and Emma) have never told anyone their secret, with the exception of Rhydian, who is also a Wolfblood. This meant that, although she was very close to Tom and Shannon, her best friends, she would never be able to share everything with them.

Tom and Shannon eventually find out (although this was not through Maddy revealing it purposefully) that Maddy and Rhydian are Wolfbloods in the Series 1 finale Irresistible, and have kept the secret throughout Series 2 and 3.

Lone Wolf - At the start of this episode, it is shown that Maddy helps to keep her parents under control during the full moon. When she is first seen, she is watching a movie and eating some popcorn with her feet on the table. She then hears a sound from outside. Upon putting her slip-on shoes on, Maddy goes outside and finds that her parents in their wolf forms have gotten out of the den. She reveals her yellow wolf eyes after snapping at her dad; telling him to get back inside. After her mother tries to escape from the den, Maddy corners her by hitting her nose with one of her shoes. Once both her parents were enclosed, she locked the basement door behind them. The next day, Maddy releases her parents from the den and discovers that her mother had chewed on Maddy's shoe, which makes her angry. Consequently, Emma reprimands Maddy for eating popcorn while Daniel scolds her for staying up late on a school night. As Maddy starts to head out to school, she looks down at her feet and reluctantly wears her green wellies to school. At school, Maddy meets Rhydian for the first time. She embarrasses herself by telling him that he "smelled like her parents". She threatens Rhydian about being on her family's territory, who has no idea what she is talking about. Maddy then helps Rhydian when he begins to 'wolf out' after attacking Jimi in the hallway, dragging him into the dark room. She then proceeds to show him that she is a Wolfblood by revealing her yellow eyes.

Mysterious Developments - After seeing Shannon's pictures, Maddy realizes there is a wild Wolfblood in town. Maddy is internally struck with grief in this episode because she doesn't want to delete any of Shannon's pictures, but figures she must protect the secret. She tells her mum she's tired of keeping the secret, and her mum empathizes with her. Maddy learns the secret that her parents were keeping from her; dangerous wild Wolfbloods did not lock themselves up during a full moon, and they hated 'tame' Wolfbloods. Maddy and Rhydian go looking for Tom and Shannon, who had gone in search of the 'beast' that night. Maddy snaps pictures of the wild Wolfblood as Rhydian battles it, hoping to blind it. Maddy convinces Shannon of a fox fight after she deletes the photos. Maddy's parents arrive and take them home, angry that they had disobeyed their rules.
