New to the group and looking for consensus on the simplest way to create the hardware to connect RTC to my single TIU. Willing to consider the radio option, but I'm not any kind of electronic whiz.

Well having now done both -- and not being a hardware person either... The panstamp worked right away -- and all I had to do was find a usb to mini-usb wire, and download/use the xloader properly.   But the wired connection was both relatively simple overall but took a little time to iron out issues before it worked solidly -- (see the last pic the wired section, that's my "handiwork")

Note that what I just read on the panstamp website suggests you may have to solder the 5 prong screw in antenna mount to the board -- which just a few weeks ago came pre-soldered (the way I received it). To me the website suggests that  the mount is now considered an accessory...

And so what's not clear to me is what happens when it's added to the order -- does it just come loose in the box so to speak or do they solder it on for you... ?

Maybe we can email them and ask for clarification, and then if they'll solder it instead of leading if up to the purchaser ...

Panstamp has arrived! Do I still need to program it with arduino or will it work with pc based rtc program 3.18 out of the box?

David,

You do need to load the RTC code into the panStamp. Make sure that the
switch on the panStamp is in the position nearest the reset pushbutton.

First you should connect the panStamp to your PC and make sure that the
device drivers load. Note the COM port that the device drivers use.

If the drivers don't load automatically, you might need the VCP device drivers
from the FTDI web site. Get the latest version for Win 7, Win 8 and Win 10.
That is version 2.10.0.0 (dated 1/27/2014). Get the older, no longer supported,
version 2.8.30 (dated 7/12/2013) for Win XP (still works fine).

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

On my web page, look for the XLoader zip file:

http://www.silogic.com/trains/OOK_Radio_Support.html#XLoader

In that zip are the program XLoader and the precompiled binaries
for all of my programs.

Use the XLoader program to download the file "RTCModem.cpp.hex" into
the panStamp. Follow the instructions in the readme.txt file in the zip.

Let us know if it works! And send a photo for the web page.

Success

Thanks guys for doing all the HARD work!

Plugged it in and used XLoader to program the panstamp.

Connected to TIU and fired up the railroad.

On to JMRI integration!

Train room too primitive for public photos.

David...

We're not the public!  We're fellow dishevled train room folks (train rooms, not the folks).  Photos would be OK.

David,

(even a ultra closeup would be nice...)

Did the device drivers load automatically?
What version of windows are you using?

Tnx,
Mark

here's what my panstamp looks like... with the top off.  I would say the enclosure is ok but you can't see the leds... i like leds I guess, I want to see them blink when in use.

The screws are wood screws I had laying around and just there to hold it, not really tight.  It's not clear in the photo but there's a insulator between the screw heads and the board -- but i don't think that's really necessary due to the construction of the board.

I was also on WIn10 and didn't load any drivers for the panstamp.  I just had to look up what com port it was on, that's what I recall..   then of course i had to use xloader properly, selecting the correct target and the correct program to load.  I screwed this up 1 each!   (except not the first time oddly enough...it was only after I knew exactly what to do that I messed up .. well let that be a lesson to you there, not sure what it is but let it be one...)

I should add that Norton 360 does NOT like xloader. Sees it as a virus. I ignored the warnings and installed without a problem.
