This guide is ONLY to install on a computer without any OS or user data on any disk, all data will be erased, all things will be lost, you can't get anything back, don't blame me later.
Even trying to install it on another partition or another hard disk of your computer may render it unusable by the minor mistake...
If you have Windows installed forget this way and use the installer app that comes with Remix OS, it's very easy and safe to use.
Tested with Remix_OS_for_PC_Android_M_64bit_B2016081101.iso but I think it should work for other versions too.
Also I'm not a programmer or an expert on Android or Linux, I'm a regular Windows user, don't ask me how to do anything simply because I won't know...
I've found this to work just because it was the same procedure used on other Android system that I've tried before: Android-x86 (take a look at www.android-x86.org if you're interested)
And I'm doing this only because a friend asked me to install android on his old computer and I found that Remix OS DVD image come without the install option,
I was looking here and there and couldn't find anything better, only a lot of people with even more doubts than me, so I want to share it trying to help a little.
I recommend you to get an old desktop computer if you don't have one already laying around, anything made on last 10 years should work, of course for 64 bit OS you will need a 64 bit processor, for 32 bit OS you can use both 32 and 64 bit processors.
2 Gb of RAM will be enough also, remember that 32 bits CPUs are limited to something about 3 Gb even if you have 4Gb installed.
Any hard working hard disk from 8 to 2000 Gb will work, also it doesn't mater if its IDE or SATA, 2.5" or 3.5" classic or SSD, while the motherboard can recognize it.
Some motherboards may allow you to use a pendrive instead of hard disk, but it should have a decent read/write speeds to be useful.
Perhaps a converter from IDE or SATA to Compact flash or SD cards can be used but depends from motherboard also, some won't detect those adaptors as a real hard disk.
These are the steps for installing Remix OS from scratch:
1.- Burn ISO image to DVD
2.- Boot from DVD
3.- On boot screen use up/down keys to select Resident Mode...
4.- Press TAB key to edit options and type INSTALL=1 (should be in uppercase) after the currently shown options (remember to leave a blank space between other options and INSTALL=1)
5.- Press Enter to load installer
6.- Select Creade/Modify partitions (Do not use GPT)
7.- Delete all partitions
8.- Create a new primary partition, use all space, make it bootable, write to disk and quit back to installer.
9.- Select first partition and format to ext4 format even it appears to be already formatted.
10.-Install Grub
11.-Don't install EFI Grub2
12.-Select Reboot and press Enter.
The next two steps are because DVD drive is locked by Remix OS and I couldn't eject the DVD by other way...
Of course you can try to eject DVD while computer is rebooting but sometimes the tray will close again before you can pick the disc.
13.- If computer boots from DVD press up/down key to stop automatic loading and eject DVD, then press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot
14.- If computer boots from hard disk press up/down key to interrupt Grub automatic loading, eject DVD and then select the first boot option and press Enter to load Remix OS
15.- Complete the basic configuration of Android (Language, WIFI, accounts, apps and so on) then wait for Remix OS to load desktop and taskbar, this may take a while the first time.
16.- Remix OS is ready to work, have fun! ;-)
I don't know if all WIFI cards and/or USB adapters will work because I won't need WIFI on that computer, it's connected by Ethernet cable to the router.
I hope this will be helpful, if you still have trouble installing try to get answers from Android-x86 setup guides.
Please don't expect to get more answers from me as this is all that I know about installing Android on PC and I don't plan to use it on my computers for now.
And remember to not do this on your working computer, if you will use an old hard disk backup all data it may contain first.
Also you may found Android don't suit your needs on a computer and you should return to other OS.
Test it well before from Windows with the official installer and take the time to install it alone if you really like it and won't miss Linux/Windows/Mac or whatever you were using before.
You should be able to install it also on a Virtual Machine to see how it looks but this won't tell you if it will work on your real computer...
