the OS will rapidly use up the limited writes on a standard SD card.

I use a virtual machine with a virtual hard drive on my real internal hard drive with no issues.

I'm going to experiment later this week with real hardware (real USB drive; real PC; USB drive on virtual pc)

I had this same problem when I was trying to install on an old laptop I had laying around. I had the USB plugged into a USB 2.0 slot and it would hang on the RemixOS logo for over 2 hours. I came back after watching the ODI game and it was still stuck on the logo so I shut down the laptop and gave up. Then I remembered that this laptop has e-SATA on it. The amazing thing about e-SATA is that you can plug a normal USB drive into an e-SATA port and it should have the same speed if not close to USB 3.0. Anyhow, once I've done that, it boot up and install perfectly. So it's definitely a speed issue here.
