I have not been successful using Remix OS on my Surface Pro 3 due to the Surface Pro 3 not having a legacy boot option. If someone figures out a way to do it I would be thrilled as this is the device I want to use Remix OS on as a dual boot option.

Maybe you need a GRUB2 EFI to boot the system image. It works on Android X86 from 4.4.4 to 6.0. I think it should be work.

This gives instructions to disable secure boot, but there is no legacy boot option so UEFI is still necessary to boot from USB on the Surface Pro 3.

Does this help any?

To make changes in the UEFI:

Step 1:Shut down your Surface.
Step 2:Once Surface has turned off, press and hold the volume-up button.
Step 3:With the volume-up button held down, press and release the power button.
Step 4:Continue holding the volume-up button until the Surface logo no longer appears on the screen.

You should now see the Surface UEFI. Do one of the following:

  • Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3: Go to Step 5 below.
  • Surface Pro 1 and Surface Pro 2: Skip to Step 9 below.

Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3:

Step 5:Select Configure Alternate System Boot Order.
Step 6:Do one of the following:
  • Surface Pro 3: Select USB > SSD
  • Surface 3: Select Network > USB > SSD.
Step 7:Select Exit Setup.
Step 8:Select Yes to save the configuration and restart Surface.

Surface Pro 1 and Surface Pro 2 (optional for Surface Pro 3)

Step 9:Select Secure Boot Control.
Step 10:Select Disable. This will allow Surface to search for an alternate device to boot from aside from your SSD.

Note
This may affect the look of your Surface splash screen.

Step 11:Select Exit Setup.
Step 12:Select Yes to save the configuration and restart Surface.

These are all UEFI settings and Remix OS does not currently boot using UEFI and needs Legacy Mode which the Surface Pro 3 doesn't have as an option in the UEFI settings.

The .iso for RemixOS is not UEFI bootable so Rufus alerts that it can't write it as a GPT partition scheme for UEFI. Remix OS will need to create a UEFI bootable .iso or .img of their Android for PC so users with UEFI and no Legacy boot options. Hopefully the Beta will be UEFI compatible since the Alpha isn't.

DISCLAIMER: I DON'T OWN A SURFACE PC. I CANNOT GUIDE YOU BEYOND GOOGLE. YOU CAN RENDER THE MACHINE UNUSABLE IF YOU SCREW UP. CERTAIN STEPS ARE NOT REVERSABLE IF YOUR SYSTEM WON'T BOOT. DATA LOSS WILL OCCUR IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE

I got an idea if you can boot off an optical drive...

that'll walk you through a fairly generic way to enable booting from optical drives.

once you accomplish that feat....
boot the dvd ISO from the zip file.
select Resident
hit TAB
add INSTALL=1
hit enter

upon installation wizard, be smart. if ou get lost, power off. I am not a GRUB user.

The first time it asks about GRUB, this is the BIOS version. Say SKIP
the second time it asks about GRUB, this is the UFI version. Do it correctly or lose everything on the computer and possibly need to ship it back for repairs not covered under any warranty possible.

If you have a spare hard drive that fits in your Surface.... pull your working one out, put that one in and try these steps.

The Surface 3 (and Surface Pros) are UEFI Class 3 devices. Which means they lack BIOS-CSM capabilities (legacy boot).

So you can totally forget about it. Use VMware Workstation instead.

you can manually modify specific files to enable this, but it is way over the heads of 99% of normal people.

I used a pre-made image with RemixOS with Google Play pre-installed that is set to boot with EFI.

Instructions here:

Works well on my Surface Pro 3 minus the Bluetooth keyboard cover.

I used the pre-made image linked to above to get this working on my Surface Pro 3. Yes, the touchscreen works perfectly. The only thing that doesn't appear to be working is the keyboard/trackpad cover for the Surface Pro 3. But you can use the onscreen keyboard to get around. I played Clash of Clans on my Surface Pro 3 last night and was very pleased with it.

Actually just started up RemixOS again today on my Surface Pro 3 and now the keyboard and trackpad are working just fine along with everything else. I didn't change anything, so this is certainly interesting.

Yeah, my type cover goes in and out on RemixOS as well, but the trackpad is the worst. No pointer, but when I use it, I can select random text on the screen... Another downer about RemixOS on the SP3 is that the battery functions of the OS are not working, and the machine never sleeps when put into standby mode. The backlight and touch turns off, but there is still a faint image on the screen.

Bilal,

The reddit post where I found the pre-made image has some instructions for doing this but I haven't tried it yet.

From the post:

"If you so choose you can copy the AndroidOS folder to a regular partition and use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824154 to create a bigger data.img. Then whenever you want to boot Remix you can just put in the flash drive and it will automatically find the AndroidOS folder on the root of an existing partition."

Does anyone know whether this UEFI boot method will work with the original Surface Pro (SP1)?
I would assume so, given it also has no legacy boot options, however unlike other surfaces, it does not have a boot order preference in the UEFI?
Any thoughts? I've been testing it in a virtual box, however would like to try it on the Surface Pro (preferably booting from the USB)

hello guys i am here to share my experiance with you all. first i make a usb and run remix os through usb. but its very slow. then i try second method to boot from internal SSD and you guys dont believe but its super fast, moreeeeee faster then my galaxy s6 edge. smooth. wifi speed is not that good but everything works. including type cover and pen also. you can install one note from play store and can use your pen. checking camera now.

how to boot from internal SSD. just simply copy ANDROIDOS folder to C:\ and then at reboot just use flash drive to get x86 bootloader. after you boot into remix os. you can unplug usb.

What model of the Surface Pro line are you using Bilal? Also, what do you mean when you say "use flash drive to get x86 bootloader"? If you could explain the process a bit more in-depth, that would be great. I copied over the AndroidOS folder to my C:\ but when I loaded it from the bootloader on my USB, it did not detect it. Thanks!

Hi Bilal Basra

I have a request and a ton of questions.

Could you elaborate a step by step guide so that its easier for sp3 user to follow?

Is there limited storage or could it be defined?
Do you have to insert usb everytime to boot remix?
What do you mean by the sdcard part? and how?

Seek your kind support. Thanks.

I have the same questions basically.

I managed to boot off the USB. I tried the steps outlines, boot in usb, reboot in windows, copy content of usb disk to root of C drive, boot with usb until launcher and then remove usb key.

I get stuck on remixos splashscreen.

Tried sd card, same thing

tried c drive and sd card

same thing.

To make Remix OS load from a local drive, you need to turn off Bitlocker.

How to install “Remix OS” on Surface Pro 3?

1.       Things we need.

a.       A memory card ( I used my spare 2gb card).

b.       Surface pro 3 ( of course)

c.       Files download from link.

https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B2cSlWc2yl7ET3ZkRGNqVzJLdjA&export=download

2.       Extract the downloaded file.

3.       Copy “efi” folder to the memory card

4.       Copy “ANDROIDOS” folder to C drive

5.       Now turn off your surface pro 3.

6.       Press “volume up” key and “power button” together

7.       Now disable “Secure Boot”

8.       Click on exit,

9.       Surface pro 3 restart and you will see 2 options there.

a.       X86

b.       Windows

Select x86 and wait. Remix OS will boot and you will see setup screen.

Thank you sir.

I did try that. the surface will not boot from the sdcard.
What worked for me is boot efi on usb stick. and android os on the sdcard

once the dev/sbl1 is found, I remove the usb and it works very well.
But from the C drive, it does not work for me.

I will retry.

cheers and thank you again.

remix is super fast so far. faster than the ipad I have at home. Incredible!!
remix os is kind of buggy, but works very well too. So far, I have lost touch once, keyboard and mouse (detach, reattach fixes it) sound once. rebooting fixed it.

Thanks for the detailed method!
Works like a charm except for the type cover(keyboard only). The touchpad works smoothly.
Since this is an alpha version , it is expected to have bugs.
Also, please use RUFUS to prep the USB as the included tool with the Remix installation does not work as intended and the installation throws up a "USB low write speed error" and stops.

Hello,

I am delighted with RemixOS, and more so since I managed to run it on my Surface Pro 3. Still, there are two things that hinders the usefulness of it.
The main reason I want to run RemixOS (or some other flavor of Android) on my Surface is that always-on feel: you don't need to wait for your tablet or phone to turn on, because you don't need to turn it off. And you don't even need to unlock it, because you can just press a button and see if you have a new email, change a music track, etc. You don't even need to take it out and look at it, since it has audio notifications.
Now, for that to work, something like Microsoft's 'connected standby' is needed - but windows, even if it does support this mode and is very power efficient, sucks at providing the benefits I mentioned.
RemixOS, on the other hand, could leverage all the nice infrastructure in Android, but:
- the launcher/lock screen/notification system in RemixOS removes all those benefits...
- RemixOS in my Surface Pro 3 consumes a lot of power (no detailed stats, unfortunately), and the standby mode just turns of the backlighting.

So, although every expected difficulty seems to have been surpassed in RemixOS (all the hardware works nicely), it's usefulness is very reduced without these two features: standby and regular notifications.

My question is:
Are there any plans to address these issues?
Is there any way I can tweak my install to try to get these working, and report my results?

Thanks, and keep up the good work, Jide Team!

I am using an i3 Surface Pro 3, and even with the recent surface patches in the kernel in the latest release, I still get a ghost touch eventually that makes using the touchscreen impossible. This is evident when I enable "Show Touches" in developer options. Does anyone else have this issue, or does my device have a defect?

Have you cleaned up the screen or used with type cover?
The touch panel on that cover became so sensitive.

Otherwise, it may get well after resetting except the above...

Ok to run remixos on a Surface 3 there are 2 options, direct from USB (follow simple remixos instructions to create). Then you need to switch your surface on holding down volume up button. When in EFI bios, disable secure boot. Save and restart. Once win10 has loaded up sign in and open up start>settings>update&security>recovery>advancedrecovery(restart now)
Select boot from USB when it restarts. Follow the standard RemixOS install routine. Once RemixOS has booted everything apart from touch screen should run fine and dandy (even the keyboard and touchpad). I have installed google play store and amazon underground and all apps appear to work fine.
The second option is to dual boot. To do this you again need to turn off the secure boot mode of your surface 3. This time when back in Windows 10, you need to use the RemixOS tool (downloaded with the OS) using this (as of 1st March 2016) you can choose to install to an internal HDD. In order to do this you need to partition your internal HDD with at least 5GB second partition formated in fat32. (to do this in "computer management" tool, you need to first schrink the primary partion a little inorder to "free up" some room. Create the new partion and format as fat32 you might also want to lable it "Android".) Once you have installed RemixOS on this partition using the RemixOS tool, you are prompted to reboot. Once your surface is rebooted you are given 2 boot choices, the default windows and the second RemixOS (note you have 26 seconds to decide before it boots to windows). If you choose RemixOS it starts its installation boot sequence. Once this is completed further boots are very much quicker. The only issue I have had with this second partition install is that sometimes the first install has problems opening some apps. If this happens, reinstall RemixOS within windows using the RemixOS app again. Once working, it stays working. Important last note, write down your bitlocker code before starting either of the above, as you will need to enter this code the first time you boot windows after turning off secure boot. Enjoy :)

I have witnessed the same myself on Windows 8.1, on my Surface Pro 3.
It is one of the most terrrible bugs, I guess in the firmware - or maybe it is hardware problem? - since it renders the device totally inoperable (unless perhaps if you totally disable the touch drivers). Microsoft never aknowledged this issue, as far as I know.
Luckily, it occurs intermitently, but sometimes the problem persists for a few hours, even after reboot. Could never find what triggers it.

How did you get the touchscreen on Surface to work?

On my Surface Pro 3, I just manually copied the files from the iso released in March 1st to my Sandisk Ultra 16 GB micro sd card, in the built-in micro SD card reader. The micro SD I was already using for dual-booting Ubuntu, so it already had grub2 installed. I didn't change anything in the internal SSD partitioning, which I only use for Windows 8.1 (all original partitions are there, unchanged). I only changed the UEFI settings to disable secure boot and to set the boot order to USB first.
Then I copied over the entries in grub.cfg from the iso to my customized grub.cfg on the micro SD.
My Surface has all the current firmware and drivers from Microsoft, except for the graphics (I installed the more up-to-date Intel driver, to get proper colors).
RemixOS always worked with the touch screen from day one.
Later I created a data.img for persistence, using ubuntu live iso (booted from the same micro SD).
Note that it also works with secure boot enabled, although for some strange decision from Fedora guys, some functionality of grub will be unavailable (no loading modules is allowed, even though you can boot a non-signed kernel!)
