Well I had this issue last year, and now with the Mac OS 11 Big Sur upgrade it's reared its ugly head again: the equalizer in Music is not working. If you have the EQ set to a specific setting, or a customized setting, it doesn't apply it to the audio stream until you turn it off and turn it off again. It decides to turn itself off (even though the checkbox says it's on) intermittently after that, as well. I suspect it turns off every time you select a new playlist, radio station, or album in your Library.
The last time this happened it took months for Apple to issue a fix. Anyone have a fix in the interim? Other than selecting all your Library's songs and applying an EQ setting to them; that won't solve the issue with streamed music.
However, the same issue has now reappeared in macOS Big Sur 11.1. Any EQ setting in Music resets once a song changes or a new album is selected, unless an EQ preset is applied to the entire library.
This workaround does not apply to streamed songs in Apple Music. The EQ will reset and has to be manually applied again whenever a song changes. It would be great if a fix could be included in the next Big Sur update.
I've got the same problem on Big Sur that has been a PIA for years on apple itunes/music and what ever. Whenever I pause the music stream the eq shuts off. This makes for a lousy music experience. EQ issues have been going on for YEARS with no resolution. Fix this now or I will be cancelling my subscription and will move to one of your many competitors. I also recommend that all subscribers do the same until Apple takes their music app seriously.
I have the exact same issue on my 2019 16" MacBook Pro. I upgraded to Big Sur 11.1 and couldn't figure out why when I play a song it sounded "muddy". Go to Equalizer and move any of the sliders and BAM equalizer is on. Pause the song playing then hit play again....EQ is off. Get equalizer back on and if the song replays or it moves to next song EQ is off again. Considering I have a large library and don't subscribe to any streaming music services and I listen to music the entire time I'm working its officially the most maddening thing I've ever experienced on a Mac. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Reported my issue also via Apple Support. Tried Pram reset, T2 Chip SMC reset. Nothing has fixed it so I surmise its OS related.
I too see the same issue... actually, on my early 2020 MB Air with OS 11.2, the Equalizer has zero effect on any music in my library. Not only that, but oddly enough, the Music app crashes instantly at startup on my Late 2020 MB Air M1. I've reported this to Apple.
Jury is still out for me but the latest Big Sur update appears to have addressed the EQ issue. If not entirely fixed it is certainly much better at holding EQ settings and keeping it turned on when I expect.
I hate people who threaten to take their business elsewhere, but unfortunately, this problem is so annoying to me that I am seriously tempted to buy some other computer for half the price that will at least play music without the annoyance.
I replied to this thread on March 4th. At that time my 2015 iMac was experiencing this issue. I just received a new M1 Mac mini. Surely I could now move past this problem and start listening to music without having to continually click the 'ON' checkbox on the equalizer for every song I played. But sadly, the issue is present even on new hardware. How can a company that sells a music service be unable to fix a software equalizer to simply make it stay ON?....I just don't get it.
Sadly I feel Apple just don't care about these bugs and don't have allocate enough programmers to Fix them. However I'm sure they've got a huge team of graphic designers changing the app icons every week.
I have a custom equalizer preset created in Apple Music on macOS 14.4.1. I noticed today that if I am playing a song and then skip to another song (sometimes it takes a few skips), it will sound as though my equalizer is turned off -- everything begins to sound very flat.
If I go to Equalizer, it shows that it is checked (on) and that my custom EQ preset is selected. If I try switching to a different EQ preset, or change anything, it does absolutely nothing to the sound. If I turn it off, no change. If I exit Apple Music and open it again, it starts working as expected.
I have the same issue, and I've noticed it takes around 10 skips to disengage the EQ. Tried booting into Safe Mode, didn't resolve anything. I tried adjusting sound enhancer and crossfade settings, also didn't do anything. Seems like a system issue, guess we have to wait for it to be resolved.
Same issue here (16" M1 Max MBP). Sound quality is outstanding for the first few songs, then it drops out and only closing and re-opening Apple Music resolves the problem. I've disabled sound enhancer, crossfade, Dolby, Lossless, and every other audio setting I can find. I've tried manually setting the equalizer type for my entire library. Nothing works.
Literally same issue. I noticed also that if you leave Apple Music playing without touching anything it can work for a bit more than 10 tracks. I reached the record of 15 track without having problems with the EQ lol.
Apple is getting sloppy AF! Ever since Steve Jobs died, Apple's overall bug attention went down south... it's all about spreading themselves thinner than ever and neglect quality, innovation and support!
I love the application but i have a severe issue that makes it impossible to use.
Apple music shows up in the application as player, no issues there.
I start playing a song and i verify that the equalizer settings are working, fine! (i also lower the preamp level to make sure i notice if the equalizer is bypassed
After a few songs (random it seems). Suddenly the volume is increased e.g. the equalizer is bypassed.
Poweramp eaualizer and Apple music is the only visible applications and it does not matter if it's in front or not..
However, WHEN this happens, if switch to Poweramp equalizer and Swipe it away (up) the equalizer is again enabled.
The same story then repeats itself where it's suddenly after a few songs disabled.
Now since it's not running in the gui, i just open the app (Poweramp eq) again and swipte it away and it's again enabled ... and repeat..
During this i can see the Poweramp eq notification in the notification bar all the time
I have experimented with different settings on the m17, also made sure no powersave modes are set (as i can see) the ADB permissions is done aswell.
Any clue as to what i'm missing here?
It seems to happen more often if there are shuffle mode going on allthough it's not clear since it also happens when listening to one specific record, so one idea i have is if it's something to do with the format of the song e.g 44, 96 etc?
For knowledge, this is the only app i've tested so far and the one i use. The next step would be to e.g. try spotify or some other app and see if it's the same behaviour.
Also if equalization disappears while app is in background means background optimization is enabled and should be specifically disabled for the app (usually via long pressing its icon / ( i ) / Battery ...).
First test.
Have now been playing spotify the last 3 hours without any issues. So possibly related to Apple Music only then.. Of course spotify is always same quality output aswell. Will reset settings next but also test another app which changes resolution depending on albums. if Apple Music still fails.
As soon as the switched to song was different, the equaliser was "bypassed/of"..
I then tested to turn of the default DVC setting aand i've now tried the same thing for a little while without the issue occuring..
Nope.
Tried various settings now, DVC on, off, reset to factory defaults etc.
Just starting a playlist and skipping a few songs will disable the equalizer, more often when resolution was different but even if it stays 44.1 the equalizer is off.
Then as before i can bring Poweramp in front and swipe it away and suddenly it's enabled again. Even if i then open it and it stays in fromt, it will happen.
Will test some more.. (btw latest playstore version of both apps)
Checking the DSP sampling rate in Poweramp eq when using apple music on the m17 i can see that it always display the same sampling rate as the first track played. e..g if it's 96 it stays that way or if it's 44.1 etc. so even when tracks in apple music is other sampling rates it seems to lock on the first one, is that a clue?
Then if i swipe away the app and open again it will set it to the current playing song again.
@Peter Bratt I can't reproduce issue with Apple Music (3.9.1) but I test on phones only - no expensive DAPs available. Also, please note that Android audio subsystem usually won't process effects for Hi-Res output (anything > 48kHz), except for Bluetooth LDAC 96kHz. Also, if Offload, Direct, or FastTrack output is used for the particular track, it won't be processed by effects as well. On Android phones, apps like Apple Music, Spotify or YouTube Music and similar never use Offload/Direct/FastTrack outputs - builtin players may do so. On DAP audio system is (probably) modified, so this may be the cause.
Hey. Yeah probably. The DAPS of course in various way override the 48kHz limit in Android devices.
Would be nice ot have this app working in those devices of course aswell, i will test to see if it actually works better when disabling hi-res for apple music so it stays at 44.1
I had this issue just after installing Poweramp eq. I think the issue was caused by my existing installation of Wavelet, probably because it was competing with Poweramp for audio control. Uninstalling wavelet fixed the issue.
