A godmother is a female godparent in the Christian tradition; she is present at the christening of the child and promises to see that the child is raised to be a Christian. She may also offer mentorship and/or claim legal guardianship of the child as her own if needed due to circumstances.

I told you that fairy godmothers are a little less than angels. We are given only enough power to hold in our two hands. There is not enough to go around.
I told you that we spend it very grudgingly, and only on those who cannot succeed without our help.

We bet on the ones we think will make it, like birds who feed the strongest chick. We pour love out on those who are already loved and magic on those who only need a little, since a little is all we have to give.

Of course, it is fun for a godparent to spoil her godchildren with gifts and treats. However, the Catholic Church asks more of a godparent, which allows the relationship between godmother and godchild to grow even deeper and more special.

When my sister and brother-in-law asked me to be the godmother of their coming child, I was thrilled! I was so excited to have a little godchild to buy gifts for, take on outings to the park, and teach how to bake cookies or pump on the swings. With no children of my own, I also took my role as a godparent very seriously. I prayed that I would be a good example of faith for this child, and I looked forward to telling her Bible stories and showing her how to pray the Rosary. I also prayed for her every day.

It is never too early to tend the soil around those seeds of faith planted at baptism. We are here to help each other grow in faith and get to heaven. The Catholic Church knew this when the role of a godparent was instituted. That may be the greatest challenge of being a godmother, but it is also the greatest joy!

Dear Annie: My daughter recently and courageously moved across the country to the city her godmother lives in. I chose this friend to be her god mom based on what I thought was a beautiful bond the two had with each other. I adopted my daughter when she was in her late teens after a heck of a time in the foster care system. My friend gave my daughter a dear nickname early on and lavished praise on her to no end. Fast-forward 15 years later, and my daughter obtained a master's degree, bought herself a new car, has great credit and is otherwise doing well.

Because my daughter has no rental history, the management company at the apartment she applied to wanted a co-signer. My daughter decided to ask her godmother to co-sign for her, adding, "I have significant cash that I could give to you to hold until you could be removed as co-signer." Her godmother replied, "No. I won't be doing that. Welcome to adulting."

Annie, am I wrong to be offended to the point of no longer wanting contact with my "friend"? I am shocked and disgusted at how she treated my daughter. No reasoning, no discussion, no contact with me to ask me anything about it. A few weeks later, she sent my daughter a text as if nothing was wrong.

Dear Godmother Goes Awry: I would certainly talk to your friend before jumping to any conclusions. Everyone has a different parenting philosophy; clearly hers is "sink or swim." Perhaps she thinks she is doing your daughter a service by forcing her to figure things out for herself. Or perhaps she doesn't have the money. Another good guess is that, like many people, she has an inordinate fear of financial commitments. Their attitude is, "Anything to do with money, or signing a contract, forget about it." This seems possible because your daughter offered to give her the cash as security, and she did not want any part of anything to do with this.

More importantly, how does your daughter feel about her godmother's response? If she is upset, you should encourage the two of them to have a conversation as well. If she's not upset, then you should certainly let it go.

Dear Irritated Aunt: Your nephew's logic doesn't make much sense. If it was a mistake that your son's fiancee never got her invite, then it shouldn't really matter how the other guests RSVP. I would speak to your son directly about the matter, and then have him reach out to his cousin and explain why it's important for his fiancee to receive an invite sooner rather than later.

MIAMI, March 17, 2022 /CNW/ -- Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, announced today that world famous pop icon and "American Idol" judge Katy Perry will serve as the godmother to its record-breaking and innovative newest ship, Norwegian Prima, debuting August 2022.

As godmother, Perry will not only fulfill the longstanding maritime tradition of blessing and officially naming Norwegian Prima, the first of six vessels in the Prima Class, but she will perform during the christening ceremony before Norwegian Prima sets sail on its inaugural voyages from Reykjavk, Iceland, where the vessel will be the first major cruise ship christened in the Icelandic capital.

A vital and familiar element of any ship launch and dating back centuries, the highly regarded tradition of appointing a ship's godmother is a fundamental nautical custom during which the selected godmother officiates a ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle on the ship's bow to bid the vessel and its travelers good fortune.

"We are so excited to welcome Katy Perry, a one-of-a-kind artist and worldwide sensation, as godmother of Norwegian Prima," said Harry Sommer, President and CEO of NCL. "We are so incredibly proud that she will be part of the Norwegian Cruise Line family and look forward to launching our beautiful, innovative ship with her in August."

"My most favorite way to vacation with my family is on the water. Every morning that you wake up, you get to experience an incredible new view," said Katy Perry. "I love that I get to christen her with my good vibrations, and I'm so excited for this new, beautiful, high-end, high-tech ship to take the seas, and provide once-in-a-lifetime vacations for so many families."

While on board, guests can escape to Ocean Boulevard, featuring multiple infinity pools and Oceanwalk glass bridges with breathtaking ocean and destination views, visit Indulge, the Brand's first-ever upscale international dining open-air marketplace or relax on The Concourse, featuring an outdoor sculpture garden boasting "Instagrammable" installations by famed artists David Harber and Alexander Krivosheiw. Designed by the master architects at Piero Lissoni, the ship's revamped luxurious centralized suite complex, The Haven By Norwegian will feature 107 staterooms spanning eight decks with a stunning new infinity pool overlooking the ship's wake and a new outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and cold room. Most recently, NCL unveiled its remaining culinary and beverage offerings available on Norwegian Prima and Viva, including the Brand's first sustainably-focused lounge, The Metropolitan and its ultra-upscale Mediterranean seafood specialty restaurant Palomar.

Launching August 2022, Norwegian Prima will offer inaugural voyages to Northern Europe from Southampton, England; Amsterdam; and Reykjavk, Iceland beginning Aug.12; Bermuda sailings from New York City beginning Oct. 6; and Caribbean itineraries from Galveston, Texas and Miami beginning Oct. 27.

To commemorate this exciting partnership and celebrating other entertainment headliners that will be featured on Norwegian Prima, NCL has put together a celebratory Spotify playlist. Each season, our Fairy Godmother Program brings thousands of children and teens, whose schools have little or no arts funding, to experience the magic of live theatre for free. For many, this is often their first time attending a theatre for a live performance. The program also includes bus transportation, snacks at intermission, meeting the cast, and take-home enrichment activities.

Most performances coincide with our holiday musical in mid-November and early-December and primarily serve elementary students. These shows are fresh, modern spins on classic fairy tales and are infused with contemporary cultural references to be engaging and accessible for young audiences.

We recognize that many schools and organizations struggle to find funding to provide arts opportunities to their students and carefully consider all requests for our Fairy Godmother Program. With a limited number of shows available, we prioritize ticket requests from schools and organizations with the greatest need:

Although requests are accepted starting in August, we may not be able to confirm until fall. Please let us know if this is an issue so we can adjust. Please check back after August 1st for 2024-2025 performances.

We can accommodate up to 180 attendees per performance and may be able to split your school or organization into multiple dates depending on the size of your group and ticket availability.

Other productions
We also schedule Fairy Godmother shows for middle and high school students during the season. Age ratings and descriptions of our productions are listed on individual show pages.

The online ticket request will ask if your school or group will need financial assistance with buses. Should this change after submitting the request form, please notify our staff as soon as possible so that we can try to adjust.

As part of the Fairy Godmother Program, in addition to our school matinees, we also offer several relaxed performances of our holiday musical and other select productions throughout the season. These performances are for individuals with Autism, developmental disabilities, and other sensory sensitivities to light and sound along with their families.
