Sorting and ordering options

I generally spend a bit of time each morning reordering tasks in the "Today" view (or a smart view that filters it a bit).  It's a little annoying, since I end up doing mostly the same thing each time - for example most of my daily repeating tasks end up at the end, but want to be at the start.

Is there any way I can make tasks start in the right order (or at least closer)?

Some possible things that would help that I can't see a way to do:

• Some sort of sort key field I could add, which would be used as the default order before any drag-and-drop instead of whatever is used now (which puts morning tasks last)
• A way of doing the drag-and-drop ordering from the API, so I could have a nightly job which does most of the ordering for me just after midnight
