I was inspired by this country's Olympic medalists Soraya Jimnez and Luz Mercedes Acosta. I started weightlifting at the age of 12 because it seemed to me at that time a quite different sport for women, always stigmatized as being only for men. I realized at the age of 15, when I attended my first world junior championship, that I could be good at this, and it was then that I started to take it more seriously. So, I decided to dedicate more hours of my day to training because I wanted to be a significant female reference in this country.
Could you describe a typical day in your life during periods of intensive training? A typical day for me involves waking up in a high-performance center and dedicating all 24 hours of my day to my training, nutrition, rest, and recovery. Normally, I train two weightlifting sessions a day and one physical and cardiovascular session. From Monday to Saturday, I only focus on training, and I have a rest day on Sunday when I can go out to clear my mind so that I can start again with everything on Monday. How many hours do you dedicate to training each day? I dedicate 2 hours in the morning, 2 and a half hours in my second session, and 1 more hour of physical exercises like strengthening and stretching.
The change is noticeable because, in the off-season, I dedicate myself to being with my family and my daughter. I go out with them, have fun, eat a lot, and sleep as much as my body allows. I visit places and train once a day. However, when I am in a competitive stage, I dedicate my 24 hours to only think about weightlifting.
I consider mental strength to be the most challenging aspect in weightlifting because it requires a level of concentration where the mind dominates the body in every sense. Something that helps me a lot, and I learned this from a sports psychologist, is to try to recreate every day in training what I will do during the competition. This way, when the time comes to be on the competitive stage, I just repeat what I have already done throughout the year.
I don't always follow nutritional advice because food can often be my weakness. I really like eating chocolate and fast food ?, but for such a low body weight category, it's not good. So, I get some nutritional help, but mostly I try to force myself to eat healthier and more balanced. Do you follow specific dietary plans during training compared to when you are in a competition phase? In the competitive stage, I restrict my caloric intake a lot, which means I eat much less, but nutritionally I eat much better than when I am in the general phase.
I attend therapy regularly, but I have realized that what helps my body and mind the most is having a very good rest at night. I feel that this is the best recovery for my mind and body to be ready for the next training session.
A good day for me means having successfully completed a tough training session. I know not every day is good, but I make sure that each one of them contributes to me both physically and mentally. What motivates me is realizing that in my country, I can be a reference that inspires many young people to start or continue with this sport, as well as to fulfill my own dreams of attending the Olympic Games and proving to myself and my family that all these years away from them have been worth it.
My greatest achievements have primarily been being a part of the Mexican national team for 9 years, as well as having won gold in Pan American championships during 2018, 2021, and knowing that I have a very strong start at the world level in my category. I will continue working because I want and know that I can be a world medalist.
When I started this sport, I was about to turn 12 years old, and at that time in Mexico, this was not common. So many of my peers judged and teased me, asking if I wanted to be a man, if my dad forced me to lift weights, if my body would become masculine, or if that's why I didn't grow taller as I am of small stature. I received constant criticism, even to this day there are people who still think that way, but really those things have never mattered to me because I feel that this sport has given me many beautiful experiences, friendships, and I have always done it with great pleasure and love. So, it doesn't matter what others think of your preferences, only what you think matters, and that you love what you do.
Finally, what advice would you give to young girls and women interested in pursuing competitive weightlifting? I would advise them not to give up, to fight for their dreams, and to work constantly every day to improve. Weightlifting is a very beautiful sport that offers many teachings, allows you to experience very nice things, meet people and incredible cultures, and there are experiences that are not always pleasant, but you always learn from any situation you may live through. So, I invite you to not give up, to keep working, fighting, but also having fun and enjoying the journey towards your goals. Always seek help when you need it, as competitive sports require many factors, and always think that you have to aim for more!
