[IBM Software]
OS/2 Warp 4 / Launch Event
Bob Lisbonne (Netscape)
JOHN W.
Thanks John.
I talked earlier about the need to engage in effective
partnerships with other vendors. One of the key strategic
partnerships we've already announced is our agreement with
Netscape to provide a native OS/2 speech-enabled version of
the Netscape Navigator browser for OS/2 Warp 4.
This agreement is a prime example OS/2 Warp 4's optimization
for network computing.
We're very excited to have the industry's leading Internet
client available to OS/2 customers and we're delighted that
Netscape has agreed to join us at today's launch.

JIM BARKSDALE
Hi, I'm Jim Barksdale, President of Netscape Communications
Corporation, I'm sorry I can't be there today, but we are
certainly excited about this great new announcement, working
together between IBM and Netscape, to bring you a great
product, we think, bundled with this marvelous new operating
system OS/2 Warp 4 including the Netscape Navigator with
Java bundled into the operating system, as well as a tight
integration with the Web itself. We think it's going to be
one of those kind of products that does a great job in
promoting and exploring [exploiting?] the marvelous
opportunities that the Web and Internet software in general
have provided to customers, to users and to partners. We
think that it's going to be a marvelous way to allow people
to exploit the business opportunities of the Web, as well as
consumer opportunities in the Web. But once again, it's just
something that we think is going to push this whole thing of
network centric computing forward into the future, which is
certainly one of the most exciting opportunities we've seen
come along in many, many years and we're delighted to be
partners with such a great company as IBM in this marvelous
new product. And thank you very much and John, now back to
you. 'Preciate it.
JOHN W.
Thank you Jim for that message (details to come).
Here to tell us more about Netscape Navigator and OS/2 Warp
4 is Netscape's Vice President of Client Product Marketing,
Bob Lisbonne.
Enter Bob Lisbonne.
JOHN W.
Thanks for coming.
BOB
John it's great to be here and to be a part of the launch of
OS/2 Warp 4.
JOHN W.
Bob, we believe that strategic partnerships between vendors
are a key element in the migration to true network computing
and I know you share this view.
John W exits.
BOB
Absolutely.
At Netscape, we're committed to open system cross-platform
solutions and to working with other technology leaders to
provide our customers with the products they need to get
things done.
In fact, delivering Navigator on the OS/2 platform will
expand our cross-platform open systems architecture to 17
different platforms.
It will bring Netscape Navigator functionality at no cost to
over 14 million OS/2 users and we expect that number to grow
as a result.
With the Internet being the driving force behind the network
computing model, Navigator delivers the features OS/2
customers want and use most.
It's a sophisticated Internet client with the latest
Internet features including plug-in extensions, frame
support, Java, Javascript and integrated HTML capability and
news functionality.
It will enable customers to standardize Internet browsing,
email and news group access upon the various platforms that
are used within any enterprise.
There's also a synergistic effect between OS/2 Warp 4's
other innovative features and Navigator.
Warp 4's built in support for Java enables Java applications
to run with the same stability and robustness inside the
browser as they do outside.
OS/2 Warp's premier networking and innovative speech
recognition capabilities, including the ability to access
the Internet directly via URL's on the desktop, add to
Navigator's already extensive line-up of features and add
greater functionality and ease of use for the customer. OS/2
Warp 4 and Navigator can also provide unlimited Internet
connections at a low price through the IBM Global Network.
The Netscape Home Page appears on screen.
I'm sure you all recognize the Netscape homepage. It's a
familiar sight to most of you.
But I'd like to demonstrate some of the features I've been
talking about by taking you to another home page that is
just as spectacular.
Fred, why don't you come back out here and help me do some
navigating.
Fred Behning reappears on stage.
FRED
Where do you want to go today?
BOB How about the Austin Coffee Company, that's always
exciting.
FRED
Alright. Here we go.
The home page of the Austin Coffee Company appears on
screen.
BOB
There's a lot of things happening here. We can view a
Quicktime movie right on the page.
Quicktime movie of Fred opens within a window on the page.
BOB
Gee Fred, you're everywhere.
FRED
Somebody has to do this stuff.
BOB
Now let's say I want to look up a contact from a trade show
I was at recently. I can click on one of the selections on
the page, in this case InfoBook, and launch a Java
application. Then I can look up my contact.
InfoBook opens in a window.
Or, and I know you like Paris Fred.
FRED
I love Paris.
BOB
We can click on the Paris Metro Connection and find our way
by subway from the Tuilleries to Notre Dame.
Paris Metro Connection appears.
FRED
Vive La France.
BOB
And all this time we've had the IBM Infomarket ticker
running at the top of the page which is constantly being
updated. We could even open up another window and get
details on any story that interests us.
These are just some ways in which Netscape is bringing the
Internet to life within OS/2 Warp 4.
Thanks Fred.
FRED
You're welcome.
Fred leaves the stage.
BOB
We're really excited by our partnership with IBM. It's good
for us and it's good for IBM, because open system
cross-platform solutions are the future of network computing
and it is in our mutual interest to provide those solutions
to our customers.
We're working together on several other fronts too.
Besides the various Navigator bundles, we're working to
provide SuiteSpot bundles for the RS/6000 architecture and
the IBM sales force is actively selling Netscape-based
solutions and providing service support.
Netscape is fully committed to OS/2 Warp 4.
Netscape Gallileo is currently under development and will be
made available to OS/2 customers as an upgrade in the first
quarter if 1997, and we will be working with IBM to get
future upgrades to OS/2 customers at roughly the same time
as other versions of Navigator are being released.
Again I'd like to thank John for inviting us here today.
We're proud to be a part of this launch and we look forward
to even greater cooperation in the future.
John W. reappears and shakes Bob's hand as Bob leaves the
stage.
