Today we are pleased to report on the improvements and new features of our surfing simulation that we were able to develop besides bringing it to the PS5.The powerful PS5 is easily able to render a highly complex water surface in UHD at 60 frames per second. That's exactly what you need to realize a realistic surf game.
Virtual Surfing is a surfing simulation in which every surfing movement is the result of interactions between the surfboard, the surfer and the water.Every little bump on the water can lead to a different simulation outcome and therefore to a different behaviour of the surfboard. It even makes a difference where exactly these bumps hit the surfboard.Due to this simulation nature, large, bumpy waves create a rougher ride than small, smooth waves.
The ride is completely different every time, depending on which bumps you hit or how sharply you take the turns. This is because the controls also allow very fine turns. As part of this release, we are presenting improved simulation properties, resulting in a more authentic riding experience.
We provide different water surface conditions. For example, so-called glassy conditions can be found.Glassy means that the water surface is very smooth. This can be observed when the wind on the ocean is very weak for a while.
Surfers around the globe love glassy conditions as they usually create smoother surfing conditions. In addition, glassy conditions lead to crystal clear reflections on the waves.
Very free camera options allow the waves to be viewed from a variety of perspectives, including the first person perspective. This makes the lighting effects particularly impressive. We now can render these effects clearer and more vibrant than ever before.
A brand new feature is a so-called secondary swell, which can be turned on and off. Most of the time, ocean waves do not come as perfect lines. Heavy winds create waves in different directions and positions on the ocean. The result is a superposition of a multitude of waves with different sizes, lengths and orientations. A drastic example is a stormy sea where the waves seem to come from every direction.
They create an additional challenge and a spectacular scenario. By selecting the secondary swell option, the waves become much more unpredictable and bumpy.
Improved character animation and shading are further aspects we have been working on. The surfersnow appear in a dynamic, wet look. Water droplets move along the surfer's skin. On selected parts of the body, the water droplets even move differently depending on the surfer's body posture and orientation by following basic physical equations.
Another point we improved is white water graphics. White water graphics is something that is really hard to implement. Even in movie productions where rendering and simulation time is not critical, white water often appears unnatural. No wonder, when you imagine what white water actually is. It is a collection of countless particles that move in different directions and interact with each other. In contrast to smooth water surfaces, air is trapped in various areas. The result is a highly complex three-dimensional structure and equally complex lighting conditions. We use a physics-based simulation to imitate white water.
White water is created when the surfboard cuts through the waves, when waves break, and even when parts of the surfer's body dip into the water. So it's a real feast for ocean lovers! Grab a surfboard and hit the waves!
Make waves at your next event with our motion-powered surfing experience. Participants will use their natural body weight as they navigate through the waves on the giant screen on the surf simulation. Take the experience to the next level with custom graphics incorporated into the game and a customizable photo op.
A total of 251 people (110 men and 141 women), most of whom had neither surfing experience (n=167) nor VR experience (n=176), participated in thirty-minute sessions conducted in a university laboratory between March and April 2017. Using a HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD), participants watched two different VR experiences, shown back-to-back and lasting 9 minutes in total. The first video, recorded by professional surfer Kyle Thiermann, aimed at giving participants a basic understanding of surfing by observing waves and watching surfing motions (paddling, chasing waves, and popping up) first from the shoreline, then from the sea. The second video, recorded by professional surfers Anthony Walsh and Matahi Droll, consisted of an advanced, real-world surfing experience where participants watched surfers ride barrelling waves up to 5 metres.
Since VMLY&R worked with Rip Curl to build the initial Search GPS in 2014, the technology has tracked over 50,000 surfers across 76 countries, recording a massive 25 million waves surfed across 2,400 beaches.
The next round of the Rip Curl Virtual Pro will be open to the public, offering non-professional surfers the chance to compare skills with other amateurs and pros from all around the globe. As well as track their progression and share their surfs in a visually beautiful and digital way. Much like the professional WSL circuit, each Virtual Pro will focus on a key surfing destination, sending the winners to some of the best breaks around the globe.
The competition comes after a notable increase in surfing participation globally. The International Surfing Association reports that the number of surfers worldwide has increased by 25% over the past decade, with more than 35 million people now enjoying the sport.
Our virtual reality rental is the perfect addition to add the WOW factor for your guests during a Corporate Event, Fundraiser, Product Launch, Annual Meeting, Conference & Trade shows! Also a fantastic idea at Festivals, birthday parties or social gatherings. They are also the perfect attention grabber for Conventions- Attract more people to come to your booth by having this virtual reality surfing simulator as a free attraction!
"Another Superb job done by NextGen Event Co.! Our Guests & Clients loved the Interactive Installation at our Promotional Event series. It was a pleasure working with your production team, they produced all of the creative assets ahead of schedule making our events look great."

In the last decade, the number of people enjoying the sport increased by 25%. It is a business that built brands inspired by the surf lifestyle, expanding from surfing itself into several other categories.
This is an example of sports, but the crash of entertainment, tech, the merge of online and offline experience, and brand building is happening in all categories. Commerce is catching up too, and surely AI will accelerate it all.
(for those who saw it already on my feed, I would be happy to further engage on the discussion on how to merge of online-offline-entertainment-tech- consumer centric brand building, and many more we see in this example!)
FAQs Are lessons available? Yes! Each & every rider on the FlowRider will receive guidance and advice from a helpful surf instructor. If you are interested in a more personalized experience, Splash Lagoon is now offering private surf lessons with 60 minutes of reserved time on the attraction. Instructors will guide you & your friends through multiple skills. Private lessons are built for groups of up to 10 participants, but additional participants may be added for a small fee. Visit splashlagoon.com/flowrider for details.
Standing or surfing on the FlowRider is an advanced skill, which may require several visits or the completion of a private surf lesson. Standing or surfing is only permitted while the ride is operating with one rider at a time. If the FlowRider is operating with two riding lanes, standing will not be permitted. Those especially interested in learning to surf are encouraged to sign up for a personal surf lesson.
The FlowRider at Splash Lagoon is built to accommodate two riders as they kneel on the bodyboard. In times when there are less riders waiting for the FlowRider, the barrier may be removed between the two riding lanes to create one large riding lane. With this larger lane configuration, only one rider is allowed on the attraction at a time, though standing and surfing will be permitted.
Yep, the first ever Rip Curl Virtual Pro presented by Tourism Fiji champion gets the whole suite including: five return flights and five nights accommodation at the ultimate surfing destination, plus, brand new wetsuits and a $500 Rip Curl gift voucher.
Rip Curl analyzed your data from their supercomputer in the international space station, and scored you in real-time. The scoring criteria was based on 2 key metrics: wave length and wave speed. Bonus points were allocated for surfing a new location and cadence (a wave every 4 minutes).
Virtual Surfing is a complex surfing game/simulation that gives players control of their surfboard with realistic physics while enjoying the majesty of the waves brought to life in realtime with complex geometry and lighting on the water surface.
In this downtime between being able to offer in-person video coaching, we are offering a virtual coaching service. If you have come on a retreat and have your collection of clips that you would like analyzed again, you can send to us and you can schedule a Zoom call to have Holly go over that footage with you and any question you might have about your surfboard, the waves you surf, the next steps in improving your surfing.
