AAS seeks a Programme Manager for H3 Africa
The African Academy of Sciences is looking for a Programme Manager for the Human Hereditary and Health in Africa (H3Africa) initiative.

H3Africa seeks to create and support a pan-continental network of laboratories that will be equipped to apply leading-edge research to the study of the complex interplay between environmental and genetic factors which determines disease susceptibility and drug responses in African populations. Data generated from this effort will inform strategies to address health inequity and ultimately lead to health benefit in Africa. 

The Programme Manager will develop and manage the H3Africa portfolio of activities and investments that include grants, engaging with grantees and partners, and monitoring progress and outcomes of the initiative. The individual will also support the day to day financial and operational management of the H3Africa portfolio operational budgets, expenditures, flow of funds to grantees and processes related to financial queries from grantees with the support of the COO, Finance Manager and the AESA Grants Accountant. They will also serve as the Chair and Secretary to the the H3Africa Data and Bio-specimen Access Committee, supporting regular meetings requirements, preparing briefs, and liaising with internal and external contacts.  The incumbent will report to the AESA Director.

Apply for a Grants Officer position at the AAS

The African Academy of Sciences invites applications for the Grants Officer position by the deadline of 19 August 2016.

The Grants Officer will report to the Grand Challenges Africa Programme Manager. She or he will support the programme manager in the day to day operations of the GC Africa that include planning and organising events, managing the application and grant management processes and engaging with grant applicants or award holders, through regular rapport and external visits as appropriate. The individual will also prepare briefing reports and provide detailed guidance to applicants, grant holders, and other stakeholders on the application process and management of awards.

SANTHE is offering Collaborative Grants
The Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence is now accepting applications from investigators for 1-year collaborative grants for research projects that address critical challenges to African capacity in HIV and/or TB clinical, social/behavioural, and biomedical science.

Priority will be given to projects that establish new collaborations that add value to existing skills and initiate a programme of study that is likely to be competitive for external funding. Project leadership must include at least one African investigator who is based at a *SANTHE site.

Pan African Chemistry Network Congress 2016
The Pan African Chemistry Network will hold its congress on 30 November to 2 December 2016 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The 10th PACN Congress will bring together over 200 participants from across Africa and the globe to discuss current research, challenges, new developments and crucial issues on water.
There will be 4 themes covered in the scientific sessions, namely:
  • Water and Health – including sanitation, waterborne disease, pathogen detection, disinfection, disease prevention and disease treatment
  • Waste water management and treatment – including water reuse in industrial, agricultural and domestic environments
  • Water quality and contamination – including pollutant monitoring, removal of pollutants and analytical techniques
  • Water policy – including the implementation and assessment of chemical science innovations for sustainable water
Interested participants are invited to register or to submit abstracts by 23 September 2016.

Keystone Symposia Malaria Conference in Uganda
The Keystone Symposia will hold a conference on  Malaria: From Innovation to Eradication on 19-23 February 2017 conference in Kampala, Uganda.

Organised in collaboration with MESA (Malaria Eradication Scientific Alliance) and also supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the four-day open conference will examine the scientific progress being made toward the goals of eliminating and eradicating malaria, from biological challenges and discoveries, to the development of the next generation of tools, to potentially transformative strategies to eliminate malaria.

Global Health Travel Awards is providing full funding to attend the meeting to researchers in LMICs where malaria is endemic.

Applications close on 20 September  2016.

In addition, Keystone is offering a limited number of no-cost registrations to researchers in the local area. The application deadline for those is November 17, 2016.
