Is that legal?
They want to sell me their software on a yearly subscription. But I want to continue to use the old desktop software. It works for me. And I need it to look at prior years data sets.

One thing I know for sure, is that I won't be giving them any more money. Their licensing schemes are always doing this kind of shit, the activation or license check is poorly executed and breaks, they have the worse scheme of any software provider I have come across.

Last time I had an issue with their licensing check, was when Reckon's agreement with Intuit ended and the brand and domains for Quickbooks and Quicken reverted to Intuit. Reckon's licence check was then linked to somebody else's domain and broke. Went to do a BAS and it just refused to work, because it periodically does a licence check even though you own it outright. They were able to reactivate it over the phone but not online.

This looks even more dodgy when it is combined with you have until 30 September to ... start STP reporting. and Upgrade ... with our exclusive special offer below to be Single Touch Payroll (STP) compliant and to avoid any fines with the ATO ...

Yes, based on prior form.
We had an old version of Quickbooks, and got a new PC and new version of Quickbooks (8 years later version). The new version couldn't read the old file format and we had to install two (IIRC) intermediate versions of software (provided on the disk) so that each could upgrade from the previous file format. Was a major pain. Can't imagine Joe Average user would have managed it.

There is still an option to buy the Reckon accounts for a large dollar amount, but you really gotta dig for it, they want you to subscribe forever. Olds were forced into upgrade when their last PC was retired.

They have it set up so your software has to "ask for permission to run" on the net, they can turn it off at will. They did that once already so I had to ring up for a sales pitch, but thankfully they allowed me to use the software I bought after saying no to an unneeded and expensive upgrade.

Spoke to my accountant today. She thinks STP may get re thought as it's beyond most micro businesses, which means it's beyond most businesses in Australia. In my situation I get another year doing what I have been doing without having to do a STP; quarterly bas and PAYG, and pay super.

Yes I had to call a few years ago. Inconveniently it was over a non-trading period so we weren't running QB regularly. Went to do BAS and not working and not reactivating on-line and BAS due in a few days.

Will have to chat about this with my liberal party supporting work buddies; before last election most common comment was Liberals are better for small business. STP doesn't look like it's better for small business.

When the "Quickbooks" reverted to Intuit around the end of 2015, the domain quickbooks.com.au reverted to Intuit as well. That meant the online licence check* that referred to that domain that was scheduled around the same time stopped working. Ours refused to proceed and said phone this number.

Had a look at Acclaims Cashbook complete?
Been meaning to give it a good go myself but all I have managed to do so far is look at a sample BAS report.

Pricing is outright and based on your company file. For each separate business you create you need to get a new licence.

Having said that the price is a lot more reasonable than the others.

Ive been reading this with interest.
I have been running Quicken Home and Business 2010 since well 2010!
I have it on 3 PC, 2 of which now are telling me that my license is due to expire in 2 weeks.
On the third PC I wrote a firewall rule to exclude Quicken from communicating both inbound and outbound. So far its not affected my license renewal (which is in 2030 for some reason).

It seems BAS is Australia only and I guess that's one of the reasons these companies exist. Guess many have learned a lesson how much it is to pay to tie business to one single proprietary software. There will always be pains moving to a different solution but open source is a lot safer in the long run and if enough have moved there someone will eventually write an Australian module or plugin that does the thing. In fact I guess there might be one in this list?

If (when) Myob pulls the pin on me, I will go for them. They even have BAS, payroll and the latest red tape government impost "single touch payroll" (more like touched up by the government every week)

Disgusting. You should go through the original licensing agreement and review the terms. There may be a legal problem they are opening themselves up to. Perpetual licenses are perpetual, regardless if the vendor decides they want to make you activate.

Does the VM thing convert the entire drive, OS and all?
Yes VM convertor makes a VM image of your entire OS, once made you can move the image from PC to PC and open it in something like vmware player or workstation. You can uninstall all the unnecessary programs and files.

Thanks, good solution but quite a big job; clone drive, delete unneeded files and apps, remount trimmed drive and create the VM image.
You can create the VM image without deleting anything if you want or you can delete wants not required after the image is running in a VM.

Cameyo Wikipedia entry says "The application to be virtualized needs to be installed after opening Cameyo. If it is previously installed, it will have to be uninstalled and reinstalled once Cameyo is in capture mode"

Things like using Remote Desktop and VMware are a bit above my skill set but I've found a way (a rather inelegant way mind you) to get me by. Might not help anyone past the point of no return now but, I had happened to set a restore point (5 days) prior to the 'shutdown' or 'trigger point' to being locked out... I have now settled on monitoring system restore points and systems updates along with the six use patterns that I've been able to develop and simply make a list by checking for programs that will be effected prior to initializing a system restore. I've been doing this for quite some time now and it's got me by till now thus far ???? I've tried to modify several files but have yet to find the key to bypassing this situation. All this has left me wondering as to which files and folders I should be focussing my attention on to now in order to find the 'final solution'... In the meantime, I've tried several other programs (Manager, Nominal & FAS) and aside from Manager (which I now use for one of my accounts), nothing comes close to providing me with the satisfaction and understanding that I've been able to rely upon since installing my original Quickbooks program way back when... If anyone here is still working on the issue and is willing to share an experience that leads to a positive outcome then please do let me know. I remain willing and open to the idea of learning another program as long as it fits my needs and as long as it's not cloud-based nor requires ongoing fees... Although I have considered changing over to QuickBooks Online; I have to this point (based upon emotion) forgone that route. Ba$tard$ will never get another penny from me since charging me for every upgrade I ever purchased since 1999 in order to maintain a localised version of software on my own PC for my own use. They just don't seem to get the fact that there's a certain segment of the population that can't/won't rely on web-based services due to their location on the planet. I'm especially peeved that they surreptitiously adjusted their terms of use at some point during the many upgrade purchases of the preceding years and didn't have the damn courtesy of speeling it out in black and white when the times allowed for it. To Quicken, Quick Books, Intuit or whomever/whatever form you've taken (or will take in the future)... You've lost me as a longterm customer... Thus endeth my diatribe... but if anyone of you has found a way around this on a WIN7 Ultimate 64 bit system then please do chime in and give a poor fellow a hand ????

verses content...
The content isn't readable if you don't format it into paragraphs, people will just ignore it as all they see is a wall of text. Look at this long post = readable: /thread/9z8pmvl9?p=2#r35

Intuit developed Quickbooks in the USA, Reckon licensed it for Australia and made minor tweaks for GST etc. Intuit and Reckon decided to divorce and Reckon renamed their product Reckon Accounts. Once they parted ways, Reckon retained the code AFAIK but not the domain (e.g. quickbooks.com.au) nor the name Quickbooks. At that time, the license renewal stopped working due to the lost domain name, and Reckon supplied new keys via telephone with 2029 expiry, then shortened the expiry in later versions. Intuit started selling Quickbooks for Australia and Reckon still selling Reckon Accounts.

Only recently found this post. Have been in touch with Consumer Affairs here in WA, not interested since there is a business connection. Went to Small Business development Corp who have listened however currently they are
1. Overwhelmed with other matters arising for the Virus
2. No one else in WA has complained.
The latter is a major issue. In my view the situation is straightforward, Reckon are clearly in breach of the legislation.
The COMPETITION AND CONSUMER ACT 2010 refers in part to Unconscionable conduct in connection with the supply of goods or services. The act, in part, refers to small business and the relative bargaining power of the parties to a contract.
Quite clearly these clauses are relevant to ourselves.
Whilst there are workarounds as detailed above it is surely incumbent on us all to complain effectively. Thus please please take the time to lodge a complaint with whichever government department is set up to deal with such issues. In WA it is the Small Business Development Corporation, there will be a comparable department in the other states. Reckon have been hauled over the coals twice before by the ACCC for basically the same bullying behaviour. Please be effective.
