Does anyone know why Reikorangi has it's current spelling. Originally
it was spelled Rikiorangi - like many people pronounce it today. I read
in Carkeek's history book that it was named after a slave named Riki who
got lost in the valley - Carkeek says that it was named Riki o rangi
around that time. I presume that means Riki of the sky (or heaven) -
perhaps because he died?
So when did it change to Reikorangi and why? Someone in council - or a
misspelling by a sign maker? Does Reikorangi reflect the proper
pronunciation of Rikiorangi? I can't find any meaning in the dictionary for anything related to
Reik. Some have said that Reikorangi means, 'Gate to heaven' - how do they come up with that?
What do you know?
Please reply to the whole group.
