ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies and services, today announced the release of an enhanced version of ABBYY PDF Transformer+, a versatile software tool for easy editing and work with PDF documents. The update delivers three major usability improvements. They include:
ABBYY PDF Transformer+ offers a full set of functions for efficient work throughout the entire lifecycle of a PDF document including intuitive tools for viewing and editing content, commenting and collaboration on documents, powerful full-text search, and easy creation, conversion and protection of PDF files. Designed as a simple and affordable solution for daily work with PDFs, it gives customers true control over the content of a PDF document including its text, images, tables, and hyperlinks.
PDF Transformer also converts to more file formats than any other PDF conversion utility with output to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, HTML, and ASCII text. With each PDF conversion, the resulting file accurately retains the layout and formatting of the original PDF.
If a product is licensed for use on a certain number of computers, installing it on a greater number of computers will violate the License Agreement as well as international copyright law. Product activation technology controls the number of installations of a product and prevents installing one copy on an unlimited number of PCs, unless the License Agreement otherwise provides. If the product is used in compliance with the terms of the License Agreement, it can be re-installed and activated an unlimited number of times.
To activate your product, you must provide ABBYY with the serial number of the product and the Installation ID that was generated by the installation program. The Installation ID does not include any personal information about the user or the system and cannot be used to identify the user.
If you have an Internet connection, select the "Via Internet" option in the Activation Wizard and click "Next". The software will be activated automatically, and within a few seconds you will receive a message saying that the product is ready for use.
In the Activation Wizard, select "By fax or phone" and click "Next". Select your country to see the contact information of ABBYY offices or partners with which you can activate your program by phone or fax. Depending on your region, you can either phone the nearest ABBYY office or partner and provide your Installation ID and serial number to the operator, or fax the information. To activate your program by fax, simply print and fax the activation message that is automatically generated by the Activation Wizard to the fax number specified by the Activation Wizard. Be sure to provide your phone or fax number which will be used to communicate to you an Activation Code. Enter this code into the corresponding field of the Activation Wizard to activate the program.

I sometimes have to clean up the file by hand, because it has problems with handwritten text and tables (and checkboxes, some bullet lists, etc.). I simply open a clean Word file and copy and paste the text into the new file using the Edit->Paste Special command, which removes all the formatting. I then format the text manually. This also ensures that the margins are consistent and not haphazard, which sometimes happens as well during the conversion. I also find that the program sometimes creates columns when a table would be much more convenient. Again, I simply create the table and then copy and paste the text into it.
I usually take the finished product and then paste it into a fresh Word document without the formatting. Once I have formatted the file in Word I can then import it into MemoQ and translate it. It takes a little bit of effort to format it but I find there is less chance of weird margins and other formatting glitches if I do it myself.
I have Windows XP and would like to type into documents from Adobe PDF files. I can read these files, but I cannot type into them, as I can with other documents. Also, how can I check to make sure I have call-waiting disabled or enabled on the telephone modem I use for Internet access?
The free Reader is now in version 7.0.8, and Adobe puts pressure on nearly everybody who uses the Web for researching anything from Barbie doll prices to bioethics to make frequent updates. And most of us quickly discover that the reason that establishment outfits like to distribute stuff as PDFs is because they can control what recipients can do with the data they offer.
