Do you have childhood memories of helping your parents select, write and post New Year Cards? Well now you have the 21st century method, courtesy of HOB - quick, easy and free of charge!
As you all are no doubt aware, Rosh Hashana and the other Festivals of Tishrei are fast approaching. H.O.B. is planning a special New Year edition of the National Newsletter to be published ahead of the festivities. We are planning a special section for New Year Greetings. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our members and readers to remember friends and family at this very special time of the year.
Readers should send in their greetings to the editor at: np...@zahav.net.il by Sunday, August 22nd, 2010. Please note that your insert should contain a maximum of 40 words. Photographs maybe included, in JPEG format.
Don't forget that this service is available all year round for you to insert your personal classified ads - hatches, matches and despatches, as well as commercial classified ads.

Those who ignore their History.......
This is not another dose of severe nostalgia but simply a statement that HOB really does have a past, and an interesting one at that.
So we will be putting together as much HOB History as we can so as to establish a "library" of information, photos and tall stories to be made permanently available to members on the new Web-site to be established. All part of the new face of HOB.
Please dig out everything you have on Immigration from the UK and associated countries since 1948.....it doesn't matter what it is, - and send copies to Aharon Ben-Yossef at 12, HeHadas Street, Rishon Le Zion 75505 - OR : cri...@bezeqint.net - OR : Fax at 03-9507730.
But more than that - offering your own services in this project will be worth more than sovereigns..........

Expatriate Voting
A recent article in the Jerusalem Post entitled "Drive begins to get US olim to vote in congressional race" caused me to recall a phone call from a reporter for YNet just before the national elections in the UK. He asked me for whom I would be voting and my reply was that firstly I've been in Israel too long to have a vote in the UK and secondly, even if I did have a vote I wouldn't exercise it. The reason, I told him, is that I believe that it is not right to participate in elections - whether national, local or other - in a country in which I no longer have a residential interest. Much as I would like to influence the UK government's policies, doing so by participating in their elections after having chosen Israeli domicile and severed all business and financial connections with England would be wrong. (I'll still accept the State pension if it turns out that I'm eligible so don't anyone accuse me of not having double standards!) I feel exactly the same way about expatriate Israelis ("yordim" as we smugly call them) being given the right to vote in our elections. They chose to live elsewhere and avoid the obligations inherent in living here - why give them the same rights and privileges of the majority who - thank God - did not make that choice? Obviously, there are Israelis on temporary assignment abroad - shlichim, diplomatic staff, military personnel, businessmen, etc., who should not be deprived of their right to vote just because they happen to be abroad at the time of an election, but the "genuine "yored" - no way! We should fight tooth and nail to prevent legislation which would allow expatriate voting. At the same time, we should do what we can to promote legislation and programmes which will help bring the "yordim" back home.

OVER 1,500 DAYS WITHOUT A VISIT
After many requests and discussions with members, below is a letter that may be sent to the International Red Cross. The letter can be adjusted to your personal feelings. But we suggest the letter is kept short as lengthy ones are rarely read.
It is important that the Red Cross received hundreds of such protests and we ask that you send this request on to your friends and family in Israel and abroad.

The International Red Cross,
I cannot express too strongly my disappointment at the clearly feeble and half-hearted attempts made by the ICRC to visit Gilad Shalit.
To claim on your web-site that you are still "working just as hard" to visit Gilad as when you first failed 4 years ago only means that you have not increased the pressure nor have you shown, - for years, - any creative initiative. For one small soldier the effort is apparently not worth-while.
You have clearly never countered Hamas's refusals by trying to "upgrade" your own efforts but have just carried on as before, knowing that you will continue to fail.
When asked "What exactly have you asked Hamas to do ?" you simply ignore your own interviewer's question and give no real detail whatsoever, just the same old generalizations and platitudes. The conclusion must be that there is no detail to give.
To admit on your web-site that ..."there is only so much we can do for them" is a total abandonment of your creed. You no longer have true belief in your mission, and your double duties as messenger to one little Israeli soldier and as protector of the poor and hungry in Gaza have led you into the worst ways of expediency, well on the road that leads to total defeat.
You have lost your own self-esteem and, I am convinced of it, that of many thousands of others.
It took you four years of failure before you even realized that "working behind the scenes" is a pointless, hopeless way of dealing with Hamas. FOUR YEARS !!
Against this background, you could never persuade any reasonable man that you have really been trying at all.
Please think of these things...........
