Red Dead Redemption 2's latest update is now live on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While patch 1.31 is nothing too spectacular, it is good to see that Rockstar is still maintaining the game even five years later and several months after Red Dead Online's last significant gameplay update.
Rockstar Games released its open-world action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. Technically the third game in the Red Dead series, the game takes place in 1899 during the closing days of the Wild West. Players step into the boots of outlaw Arthur Morgan after his gang finds themselves on the run following a botched heist. Players are free to explore the open world, engaging in activities including hunting, horse riding, gunfights, and more. Red Dead Redemption 2 received universal praise from critics, earning an impressive Metacritic score of 97 out of 100.
Rockstar launched Red Dead Redemption 2's title update 1.31 on March 23. Unfortunately, the patch notes were short and did not include a full breakdown, simply stating that this update was part of the game's regular maintenance. It reportedly focuses primarily on security issues for Red Dead Redemption 2, but the information is otherwise limited. However, update 1.31 does not appear to be particularly large. Still, this is not the first time Rockstar gave Red Dead Redemption 2 a major security patch this year, with developers launching a 3 GB update in February.
While this update was not particularly big, it's about what Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online players should expect at this point in the game's life cycle. Rockstar had hoped that Red Dead Online would see similar long-term success to Grand Theft Auto Online. Unfortunately, it did not prove to be the success that developers were hoping for, with Red Dead Online's development winding down in 2022. Since then, the game has been relegated to maintenance mode, with developers moving on to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6.
Rockstar used the game's final content update to add a goodbye message to Red Dead Redemption 2's credits. This confirmed that developers were indeed stepping away from the title, not counting the minimum upkeep necessary to keep its online functions working and address problems as they come up. Of course, the game hasn't been shut down, and Red Dead Online still has regular events and an active player base. However, the game isn't receiving any new content. Minor updates like the one from yesterday are pretty much all that players can expect.
Red Dead Redemption 2 fans have a brand new update to download today, which brings with it bug fixes, new Red Dead Online missions and new settings for PC. The Red Dead Redemption 2 1.31 patch was released on Tuesday September 6, and comes hundreds of days since the last RDR2 update was released. Unfortunately for console fans, the new Red Dead Redemption 2 update doesn't add the in-demand 60FPS setting for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Rockstar Games is hard at work on GTA 6 and still actively supporting GTA Online, which means that Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online have taken a backseat. And by backseat we mean, Rockstar is hardly supporting either anymore. That said, yesterday a new Red Dead Redemption 2 update was released, Update 1.31, which gave RDR2 fans hope that something notable was about to happen, even if it was just a fix to a long-running bug or small improvements to the game. Neither of these things ended up being true.
Not long after releasing the update, Rockstar Games provided the patch notes for the update. And the patch notes reveal that Rockstar did nothing to the game but "general maintence." What exactly "general maintence" is, we don't know, but it wasn't consquential enough to detail to players. As you would expect, once the patch notes were revealed, fans of the open-world western were crestfallen, though not entirely surprised.
Unfortunately, this is all Red Dead Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 fans are going to get for the forseeable future. Both will likely be brought to current-gen consoles, but there's no indication this is happening anytime soon. And with the latter getting no DLC and Rockstar Games already admitting it's slowing down in support of the former, there's not much to be excited about if you're a fan of the series, as a third installment is probably close to a decade away, if not more.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is availavle via PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It's playable on PS5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X via backward compatibility, but not natively, which means there's no console version of the game that takes advantage of the current-gen machines. There's been rumors that current-gen versions are in the works, but so far nothing has come of these rumors, which have gone silent recently.

Red Dead Online (network module of RDR2) has had come a long and rocky way. Rockstar showed little interest in developing the title, which even led to the community giving it a "funeral". Now the situation has unexpectedly changed. The game has received a sizable update, numbered 1.31, which introduces, among other things, new tasks.
In addition to new content, update 1.31 also introduces support for AMD FidelityX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 technology on PC, and also fixes a number of bugs. From now on, players should not have problems with getting stuck in lobbies or the ability to kick other players out of sessions.
In addition, this month the game offered special bonuses for merchant sales missions. They award twice as much RDOS and EXP. In addition, the so-called Trade Route, an event in which merchants must fend off an attack by bandits, has appeared.
The vast majority of the patch note for update 1.31 is aimed towards fixing issues such as players getting stuck in lobbies, and crashes, as well as several bugs and glitches that players had accepted would never be addressed.
Red Dead Online version 1.31 released on PS4 and Xbox One. According to Red Dead Online update 1.31 patch notes, the latest update added new features as well as addressed a wide variety of bugs, including many issues reported by the community. Apart from this, RDR2 1.31 also includes stability improvements.
Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't launch with support for AMD's new FSR 2.0 (FidelityFX Super Resolution) upscaling technology when it hit the PC, but modders quickly added FSR 2.0 support... and now, the developer has added official FSR 2.0 support into the game.
The latest v1.31 update for Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PC adds support for AMD FSR 2.0, with developer Rockstar Games noting in the 1.31 patch notes: "AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 has been implemented". Ahhh, also... Rockstar, that would be "FidelityFX, not 'FidelityX' as you've noted here'.
You'll need to download the 433MB update, which will also add Reflex to reduce lag on the gamepad only (there's no help here for the mouse and keyboard input). Red Dead Redemption 2's new 1.31 update also sees Rockstar Games making improvements to Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA). So it's not just AMD FSR 2.0 in the new update, but that's the biggest deal here for sure. There's also plenty more in the patch notes, these three here are just the PC-only tweaks in the RDR2 patch.
Back in July 2022, we saw modder 'PotatoofDoom' -- the creator of the Cyberpunk 2077 FSR 2.0 mod -- pushing out a mod adding unofficial support for FSR 2.0 into Red Dead Redemption 2. It'll be interesting to see the performance between the FSR 2.0 performance between the mod and the now official FSR 2.0 support in Red Dead Redemption 2's new update.
As for FSR 2.0, I'll let AMD put it in their words: "AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2) technology is our brand-new open source temporal upscaling solution. FSR 2 uses cutting-edge temporal algorithms to reconstruct fine geometric and texture detail, producing anti-aliased output from aliased input".
"FSR 2 technology has been developed from the ground up, and is the result of years of research from AMD. It has been designed to provide higher image quality compared to FSR 1, our original open source spatial upscaling solution launched in June 2021. Note that FSR 1 can still be exposed as its own upscaling option in addition to FSR 2 in game titles. Both technologies have different characteristics which may be suitable for a wider range of platforms and user preferences. For example, our FSR 2 partner title DEATHLOOP exposes both!"
