Enter and activate your license key (or start a free trial)

When you first start NVivo 11, you are prompted to enter and activate your license key. Activation is a simple and secure process that ensures only valid licenses are used to operate the software. If you have downloaded a trial version of the software, you do not need to enter a license key, but you still need to activate the trial. To enter and activate your license key (or start a trial):

    • Start NVivo 11.
    • On the Welcome to NVivo 11 dialog box, enter your license key (or select the 14 day trial option and choose an edition), and then click Next.
    • On the License Activation dialog box, enter your details. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be completed.
    • Click Activate.
    • On the User Profile dialog box, you are prompted to set up your default NVivo user profile:
      • Enter the Name that you want to use in your user profileby default, it is set to your Windows user account name.
      • Enter your Initials your initials will be used to identify any work that you do in a project.
      • Click OK.

      Note:

        • If activation fails because you do not have an Internet connection, you can submit an activation request to QSR International by email, mail/fax or phonerefer to [How to activate when you cannot connect to the Internet] for more information.
        • If you need a user name and password to access the Internet on your network, you may be prompted to enter your network credentials (user name and password) when activating NVivo. Contact your network administrator if you have any difficulty with your network credentials.
        • When you select 14 day trial, the evaluation period starts when you activate the trial. At the end of the 14 days you will not be able to use NVivo, and you will be prompted to enter a license key when you start NVivo. During a free trial, you might want to experiment with the features that are available in different editions. You can switch to a different edition each time you launch the software or in Application Options.
        • You can change your User Interface Language.
        • If you do not want to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program, clear the check box.

        Activate your license later

        You are prompted to activate your license key when you first start NVivo. If you choose to activate later (for example, because you are not connected to the Internet at the time), you have a limited time before you must activate the license. To activate the license:

          • Click the File tab, click Help, and then click Activate License.
          • Enter your details and click Activate.

          Deactivate your license

          You can deactivate the NVivo license on a particular computer. For example, if you get a new computer, you should deactivate the NVivo license on the old computer, before installing and activating NVivo on the new computer. To deactivate NVivo via the Internet:

            • Ensure that you are connected to the Internet.
            • If you have an NVivo project open, you must close it before you can deactivate the licenseclick File, and then click Close.
            • Click File, point to Help, and then click Deactivate License.
            • Click Yes to confirm.
            • NVivo deactivates the license and displays a message confirming that the license has been deactivated.
            • Click OK.
            • The NVivo application automatically closes.

            Note:

              • If you need to re-activate the license, you will need to re-enter the license key.

              Replace your license key

              If you have a new license key, you can replace the existing license key with the new one. For example, if you have purchased an upgrade or changed your edition of NVivo. To replace your license key:

                • Click the File tab, click Help, and then click Replace License.
                • Enter your new license key and click OK.

                Understand licensing

                Each computer that runs NVivo 11 Windows software needs a license key. The first part of the license key indicates which platform it can be used on. License keys that start with:

                  • 'NV*11' can be used to install and activate NVivo 11 Windows or NVivo for Mac (Version 11).
                  • 'NC*11' can be used to install and activate NVivo 11 Windows only.
                  • 'NM*11' can be used to install and activate NVivo for Mac (Version 11) only.
