Family-Centered Approach for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity: Considerations for Early Intervention
with Cindy Esquivias MS, CCC-SLP
Tuesday June 21, 2022
12:00pm-1:30pm (PDT) | Virtual Event

As early intervention providers, we recognize that the family is the cornerstone for a child’s overall development. We understand the importance of providing family-centered care and the critical role this has on a child’s progress in therapy. But what happens when a family’s values differ from the providers? What do we do when we are faced with customs and child-rearing practices that differ from mainstream American practices? Integrating culturally and linguistically responsive practices in early intervention not only reduces harm caused by our own biases, but also ensures we center the family in our service delivery.
Summer Book Club
Saturday June 25, July 23 & August 27, 2022
9:00am - 10:00am | NO FEE

We will be meeting on the fourth Saturday morning, June 25, July 23, and August 27, from 9:00 to 10:00 am to discuss the book What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing by Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey.
As we come out of the COVID 19 Pandemic, it is a perfect time to discuss Perry and Winfrey's insights on shifting our approach to trauma and understanding how adversity in children affects the brain and behavior. We will explore how to use this information to promote resiliency and healing for the early intervention families we serve.

Chaos and Instability in the Lives of Children
with Stacey N. Doan, PhD
Tuesday, July 26, 2022
11:00am-12:30pm (PDT) | Virtual Event

Early intervention providers often have a unique opportunity to provide support to parents who are facing multiple challenges that can result in a more chaotic home environment. Chaos can have a significant negative impact on a child’s development. In the current talk, I will discuss the dimensions of chaos, analyze it at multiple levels, and provide strategies that early intervention providers can consider to mitigate the impact of chaos.
Being a Welcome Guest in Prismatic Homes: Understanding and Supporting LGBTQ+ and Other Marginalized Families
with Linda Banks and Julie Stansbury
Wednesday, August 3, 2022
1:00pm-2:30pm (PDT) | Virtual Event

To provide early care services in homes and offices where all kinds of families experience partnership, belonging, and optimal outcomes, ongoing self-examination and healing of the negative impacts of providers’ socialization is essential. This presentation introduces adults that provide services to LGBTQ+ families to self-healing strategies to create psychologically safe service spaces for LGBTQ+ families. Prismatic people have always been a part of the human family. Learn ways to show them you value their family experience to create dynamic partnerships for optimal youth outcomes.
The Importance of Parent/Child Attachment in the Latino Community
with Edgar Sierra, LMFT &
Leslie Manriquez-Jimenez, LMFT
Monday August 15, 2022
12:00pm-1:30pm (PDT) | Virtual Event

Session will describe the basic concepts of attachment theory. Attachment theory emphasizes the importance of having a healthy early attachment between a child and their main caregiver(s) during the first five years of life. We will also discuss the overall negative ramifications on the child’s behavioral health due to poor attachment patterns.
Presenters will characterize how healthy attachments look within the Hispanic/Latino community. Lastly, we will present examples of how to incorporate cultural factors while implementing attachment theory as a therapeutic approach with Hispanic and Latino families.
Emergent Feeding Strategies: Equity in Feeding Approaches for Early Intervention
with Cindy Esquivias MS, CCC-SLP
Friday August 26, 2022
12:00pm-1:30pm (PDT) | Virtual Event

This presentation will discuss ways to increase equitable feeding strategies in early intervention. We will cover common western feeding practices as they compare and differ from other cultural practices. No two children are the same, and every family has their own cultural values for feeding and mealtimes that need to be considered. Therefore, a critical component to each plan of care should address the values and goals each family has for their child’s feeding.
