A friend of mine asked me how to create a simple regular expression. Instead of giving him the answer, I made a 4-step guide in my blog that covers a lot of simple cases without requiring any knowledge of regular expressions. From the guide:

What this blog post is NOT:

  1. It is not a detailed article on the potential of regular expressions
  2. It is not a regular expressions’ history course
  3. It is not a comparison of various regex implementations
  4. It is not a course that will teach you how to build sophisticated regular expressions

What this blog post actually IS:

  1. It is a crash course that will help you build regular expressions without having to know much about them
  2. It is a 4-step tutorial that will suit your needs 80% of the time (yes, the number is made-up)
  3. It has a simple real-world example that demonstrates how the abovementioned 4 steps can be executed
