A few quick notes from Catskill Native Nursery to break up your cabin fever:

NATIVE PLANT AND PESTICIDE-FREE GARDENING AT WARD 9 MEETING
On Thursday March 20th at 6:00pm, Francis Groeters, ecologist and owner of the Catskill Native Nursery, will chair an educational discussion on native plant gardening and pesticide-free gardens and lawns.  Native plant gardening has gained interest over the past few years as gardeners embrace native and local plant species over non-native -- and sometimes -- invasive plants that create environmental imbalances.  Pesticide-free gardening has grown into a national movement as gardeners learn of the health dangers to humans and animals from using chemicals.
The event is part of the March meeting of Kingston’s Ward 9 Community Group and marks the 12th meeting and first anniversary of the community group.
The Ward 9 meeting will be from 6 to 9 pm, at the Coach House Players, 12 Augusta Street.  All Kingston residents are invited.  Future Ward 9 meeting topics will include the Kingston Land Trust and city program for seniors.

EAT LOCAL, EAT ORGANIC - CSA* PICKUP AT CATSKILL NATIVE NURSERY
(*Does everyone know that CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture? I often just assume I'm preaching to the choir.)
Last year we received a historic preservation grant from NYS to restore our 1840 English barn- and we're working on it. Actually, Ethan Zickler and the crew of Eden Design are working on it, but we're cheering them on from our warm house across the street.
We would like the barn to serve the local community, as well as the nursery. We have invited Rondout Valley Organics (RVO) to use the barn as a pickup location for their CSA starting in June. We hope people will support this endeavor and help score one for local food, now is the time to let RVO know you are interested.
Here are the details from RVO:
Rondout Valley Organics offers produce and other fine local products through our CSA program, designed with a twist to work for you!
Join RVO's CSA with an initial investment of $250.00 plus a non-refundable membership fee of $50.00.  Place your orders online. Choose from a weekly list of available products from three local farms.  Order as much or as little as you like, skip a week if you're away.  Select a pickup location convenient for you (full list is on RVO webpage). Re-up as your balance nears depletion.
For more information or to join our unique CSA, call Nadia or Oleh at 845-647-6911 or email us at rusty...@earthlink.net. Check out the site at www.farmtocity.org (look for Rondout Valley Organics under "buying clubs").

FEATURE:  Schultze Gets the Blues (GERMAN 2005)
"After portly German salt miner Schultze (Horst Krause) and his cronies are forced into retirement, the emptiness of their nowhere, smalltown-Germany existence becomes sadly apparent. The only bachelor in his circle, Schultze falls into a dull routine of playing accordion in a polka band, fishing, napping, and tending to his garden gnomes. Then a chance encounter with Cajun zydeco music turns his life around, a little. Soon he is cooking jambalaya for his pals and playing zydeco to the somewhat shocked denizens of his sleepy burg. When his friends arrange for him to be sent to the U.S. for a German folk festival, Schultze seizes the opportunity to visit the Louisiana bayou, and so his one chance at a wild adventure in life begins..." FROM ROTTEN TOMATOES MOVIE REVIEWS

Happy Mud Season Everyone! The nursery will officially open Friday, April 18th, assuming no late brewing snow storms. We look forward to seeing you all then. Diane & Francis
