The Bridge's Welcome Center offers merchandise and historical information. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Welcome Center is the first on-site center dedicated to telling the stories of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Center welcomes visitors, provides orientation and information services, houses exhibits, and offers high-quality commemorative and interpretive merchandise, and also showcases the original 12-foot stainless steel Bridge "test tower" used in 1933. Learn about the history, science, and engineering of the Bridge's construction through interactive and stationery exhibits. Wander through the Plaza just outside the Welcome Center and follow the pathway into an old bunker that houses some of the exhibits.

The Gate Gourmet barista team made a difference with their excellent hospitality services. Pedestrians, including wheelchair users and cyclists, can travel the sidewalks of the bridge during daylight hours. Rollerblades, skateboards, roller skates, and electronic scooters are not permitted. For information on sidewalk closures due to construction, visit goldengatebridge.org/bikesbridge/bikes.php.
There are vista points on both the north and south sides of the bridge. Both vista points have parking lots. These lots have limited space and are closed to vehicles on weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We recommend using public transit or booking a guided tour, like Big Bus, to visit these outlooks.

Wandering around the Albuquerque Airport Terminal, after learning
my flight had been delayed four hours, I heard an announcement:
"If anyone in the vicinity of Gate A-4 understands any Arabic, please
come to the gate immediately."
An older woman in full traditional Palestinian embroidered dress, just
like my grandma wore, was crumpled to the floor, wailing. "Help,"
said the flight agent. "Talk to her. What is her problem? We
told her the flight was going to be late and she did this."
I stooped to put my arm around the woman and spoke haltingly.
"Shu-dow-a, Shu-bid-uck Habibti? Stani schway, Min fadlick, Shu-bit-
se-wee?" The minute she heard any words she knew, however poorly
used, she stopped crying. She thought the flight had been cancelled
entirely. She needed to be in El Paso for major medical treatment the
next day. I said, "No, we're fine, you'll get there, just later, who is
picking you up? Let's call him."
We called her son, I spoke with him in English. I told him I would
stay with his mother till we got on the plane and ride next to
her. She talked to him. Then we called her other sons just
for the fun of it. Then we called my dad and he and she spoke for a while
in Arabic and found out of course they had ten shared friends. Then I
thought just for the heck of it why not call some Palestinian poets I know
and let them chat with her? This all took up two hours.
It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,

The main entrance and exit is Carney Gate, and is commonly referred to as Main Gate. Carney Gate, named after Admiral Robert Carney, comes directly off National Route 16 and is the larger of the two vehicle entrances permitting six lanes of traffic, a pedestrian gate on the boardwalk near Navy Gateway Inns and Suites, the CFAY Quarterdeck and provides a central location for the CFAY Security Visitor Control Center.
Carney Gate is the only gate that provides 24/7 access to Main Base.
