The single-player aspect features missions that involve clashes between U.S. Marines, China and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition. The multiplayer aspect of the game allows players to organize into squads that come under the leadership of a single commander to promote teamwork.[4] The story takes place in the early 21st century during a fictional world war between various power blocs: China, the European Union, the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC), Russia and the United States. The game takes place in different fronts, as the Middle East and China are being invaded by US and EU forces, and the United States is being invaded by Chinese and MEC forces. A sequel, Battlefield 3, was released in October 2011.

In Battlefield 2, players are divided into two opposing teams (which factions they represent is dependent upon the map). The key objective in Battlefield 2 is to reduce the opposing teams tickets. Tickets represent an army's ability to reinforce their position on the battlefield; each team has only a limited supply of tickets, and each casualty on the battlefield reduces the number of available tickets. Control points represent key points on the map, and are represented by flags. Control points are Battlefield 2's spawn points, and one team possessing a significant majority of the control points causes the other teams tickets to gradually decrease, regardless of casualties. A round ends when one team's tickets gone, the round's timer ends, or if at any point a team holds no control points, and has no soldiers alive on the battlefield (meaning they are not present in any way on the battlefield).

Within the infantry class, there are four support classes with special abilities. The Engineer can repair with his wrench, the Medic can revive with his defibrillator paddles and heal, the Support can resupply ammunition with his ammunition bags and the sniper can place claymores and engage long distance targets. When one of these three classes occupies a vehicle (with the exception of the recon), nearby personnel and vehicles can be replenished, repaired or healed by being in close proximity.

The commander alone has access to the "commander screen", an interface similar to that of a real-time strategy game. This allows the commander an overview of the battlefield as a whole, or zoom in and view parts of the map in real-time. The commander also has control of the various commander assets, which include artillery strikes, vehicle and supply drops, and UAV's. They can deploy them to assist their team. The commander can communicate with squads either by sending orders, or via VoIP voice communication. These tools allow the commander to strategically coordinate their forces on the battlefield.

Battlefield 2 maps have 3 variations, each suited for a certain number of players. Each map has 16, 32, and 64 player-suggested variations in which the area of battlefield or playing field is relatively small, medium, and large, respectively. The only exceptions to this are Wake Island 2007, which is locked at 64-player size and the Euro Force maps, Operation Smokescreen, Great Wall, and Taraba Quarry, which have no 64-player size. 32 and 64 player maps are unavailable to offline players from retailers, but an option is given to download 64 Single player AI bot mods. Other contrasts between these variations other than the size are the number and position of control points and availability of vehicles. As a result, the gameplay of the map is different depending on the variation.[17][18]

There is no given reason as to how or why the war broke out. In-game, the European Union and the United States fight China and the MEC. It is mentioned in-game that the US and EU are allies and the EU has negotiated a truce with Russia, but it is unknown if China and the MEC are allies. The game also takes place in different fronts, as the Middle East and China are being invaded by US and EU forces, and the United States is being invaded by Chinese and MEC forces.

Battlefield 2 Special Forces takes the intensity and quality of Battlefield 2 behind the scenes of news headlines, showcasing the most elite and deadly forces in the modern military world. Using accurate Special Forces weapons, gadgets, and vehicles, these covert armies battle to control key military and strategic locations.

Special Operations Surgical Teams, commonly referred to as SOST's, are teams of lightweight, mobile surgical specialists with advanced medical and tactical training to save lives, anywhere and anytime.

If selected, new members go through 10-12 months of specialized training before deploying on their first operational mission. The training includes several survival, evasion, resistance and escape courses, advanced operational medical training, and several months of SOF-specific operational and tactical training. They also receive SOST and Special Tactics centric familiarization, and finally participation in a full-mission profile exercise with other combat units.

A 6-man Special Operations Surgcal Team stood up an ER/OR in an undisclosed location right behind the Forward Line of Own Troops (FLOT). They conducted damage control surgery and stop bleeding to transfer individuals to a higher level of conventional care. A total of 1,011 patients including coalition troops, local partner forces, civilians and children recieved care for: 539 blast wounds and 221 gunshot wounds. Around 1370 units of blood were transfused, had 53 emergency blood drives, and condcuted 211 life-saving surgeries. The team had a 98.2% survival rate even though they were taking in fire within 200 meters of where they operated.

The 24th Special Operations Wing launched the Special Operations Center for Medical Integration and Development, a program designed in cooperation between the U.S. Air Force and the University of Alabama-Birmingham to develop and provide advanced standardized training to special operations medics. The training used realistic and innovative techniques including virtual reality, field training exercises and clinical hospital rotations to maintain readiness of Special Operations Surgical Team members, pararescuemen and independent duty medical technicians.

The work of SOF is often conducted using unconventional tactics and techniques and includes targeted actions against high-profile enemy officials, information and psychological operations, and the establishment of resistance networks. Indeed, acts of sabotage and assassinations like the recent killing of prominent pro-Russian collaborators Vladlen Tatarsky and Zakhar Prilepin inside Russia may have been carried out by pro-Ukraine Russian nationals trained and supported by Ukranian SOF. At the same time, various elite Ukrainian units conduct strikes using first-person view drones and loitering munitions against Russian positions, often in cooperation with other branches of the armed forces. This joint dimension is critical in modern warfare, as it improves not only the overall coordination of the fighting force but also increases its effectiveness and flexibility.

Such an approach, along with the capacity to quickly adapt to contingencies, is the result of seven years of training and exercises with NATO SOF after the restructuring of the entire Ukrainian SOF organization in 2016. In 2019, for example, the 140th Special Operations Forces Center became the first non-NATO unit to receive alliance certification and become eligible to join the NATO Response Force. (Leaked US documents hinted at just how intimate that relationship has become, suggesting that as many as 50 British special forces personnel were present in Ukraine early this year, along with smaller numbers of US, Latvian, and French forces. The documents did not specify their role.)

It is known that the Ukrainian SOF have access to superior NATO equipment, which further increases its effectiveness and facilitates its interoperability with NATO forces. Overall, the progressive transition to NATO standards at all levels is pivotal to ensure a quicker and simpler integration of Ukraine into the alliance when and if the accession process begins.

Furthermore, the idea of large-scale maneuver operations may not necessarily reflect the current operational situation and options along the frontline, and additional preparatory action, including diversions, sabotage, and information operations, may be necessary on the part of Ukraine to further weaken and shape Russian forces ahead of the counter-offensive.

In February 2018, the American Special Forces team deployed to Syria as part of the ongoing campaign against ISIS that began in 2015. But after months of successful operations against ISIS, the team now faced a new adversary. Around 500 pro-Syrian government forces, including Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group, launched a nearly four-hour attack on a small group of 40 American Special Operations troops and their Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) allies at a Conoco natural gas refinery in eastern Syria. Among the largest in the area, it had multiple buildings that provided good cover. It offered the Russians a foothold on the east side of the river.

As the Special Forces convoy approached the refinery, the Russian mercenaries and Syrian forces attacked the outpost, using a mixture of tank fire, large artillery, and mortar rounds. The air was filled with dust and shrapnel. The commandos crouched behind trucks or dirt berms as the Russian mercenaries advanced behind the artillery barrage.

One Predator was on station when the attack started. It fired all of its hellfire missiles, destroying the enemy artillery so the U.S. troops could focus on the ground fight. Then the Predator lingered over the battlefield to provide a video feed of the fighting to battle captains in the command center and officials in Washington.

For the first 15 minutes, American military officials in Washington worked to contact their Russian counterparts and urge them to stop the attack. When the Russians denied it was their forces, American troops fired warning shots at a group of vehicles and a howitzer, but the troops continued to advance.
