Hello Regal Room supporters
I have some exciting news and events to share with you...
========================================================================================================
First, I would like to invite (those of you local to London) to a special seminar that I have created to help answer vital questions, inspire ideas and reveal essential truths about the music business.
For over 30 years I have had the great good fortune to work in almost every area of this industry.
During those 3 decades I enjoyed times of exciting success, toured the world on the largest stages, recorded albums, had hit singles and worked with some astonishingly gifted people.
I have seen the business from many different angles as performer, songwriter, radio broadcaster, TV presenter, journalist, entertainer and more, associating with tremendously talented people and learning from the very best.
I have also been through times of obscurity where I experienced what it is like to have to fight for recognition and start from the very bottom, with little help and no support.
During the years of building the Kashmir Klub I was privileged to see the journeys of a whole host of unique artists like Damien Rice, KT Tunstall and Imogen Heap, and I grew to understand WHAT it was that created their success whilst others were left behind.
I have often been asked for help and advice by musicians and performers who were at important cross roads in their careers and so I have now decided to share my knowledge, experience and vision with a wider audience in an informal but frank and honest discussion about the realities of the Music Industry.
For 2 hours I will highlight practical and essential skills and tools that all performers and creators need to know, including image development, finding the artist "zone", song construction, interview techniques, how to write a biography and press releases, understanding new media, brainstorming innovative ideas, the role of management, establishing stage "presence", surviving success and much more.
I will also be talking candidly about my experiences, with ongoing Q&A's welcomed as I cover each subject.
At the end of the seminar there will be an hour or so of networking with a "dream team"of highly regarded industry/creative experts who will be on hand to answer your questions in more detail and help add value to your career with their expertise and guidance.
This all takes place at The Regal Room in Hammersmith on Saturday 12th December with a very limited availability of only 60 places.
There is a nominal fee of £10 per person and tickets are available online at
http://www.wegottickets.com/event/64892 (highly recommended as interest has already been massive) or on the door if there are any seats left.
Although this will be of primary interest to performers/creators and those involved with the Music Business, the Seminar is open to anyone who is interested to know more.
Why not come early and join me for lunch there (12.30-1.30) Food is delicious, well priced and there is a great menu selection. Call 0208 748 2834 for lunch reservations

Here is the DREAM TEAM
James Doheny:
James Doheny is a communications specialist and artist manager who for the last fifteen years has worked on PR, marketing and digital projects for companies including Universal Music, Sony Music, EMI and Warner Music, the BBC and Channel 4, Coca-Cola, Microsoft and the MIT Media Lab. Brian Eno, Nigel Kennedy, The Aphex Twin, King Crimson, Robert Miles and Ludovico Einaudi are among the many notable artists he has represented.
For the last three years he has also been active at the grass roots, working with new bands such as Twisted Wheel and engaging the ‘new music business’ in 360°, something he has found invaluable in terms of its fans, culture and current communication structures, not least social media.
Originally trained in composition at The Royal Academy of Music where he later went on to teach, James has written on music and technology for publications including Wired Magazine and is the author of the book ‘Karma Police’, a comprehensive study of the career, music and marketing of Radiohead. A frequent contributor to the media he has been interviewed by the BBC, CNN, MTV, The Times, The Guardian and Time Out amongst others.
Pablo Ettinger:
A director of Caffe Nero and responsible for developing their music policy, Pablo's motivating energy is all about creating new opportunities and avenues for songwriters and performers to be discovered by wider audiences. He created an ongoing and ever growing program called "Artist of the month" where new music is featured in all the Caffe Nero stores with promotional back up and live concerts. He is a talented musician and songwriter himself, and understands the hurdles and frustrations of trying raise profile in this business.
Jacqui Wright:
Jac Inc. PR is run by Jacqui Wright who has had nearly 20 years experience working in the Music Industry. Her career kick started at a top club promotion company called 'Clubnet' where she handled the 'pop/mainstream' DJ's, promoting a wealth of top artistes that included the likes of Seal, Betty Boo and the Pet Shop Boys. Working at Clubnet, firmly laid down the foundations giving Jacqui the inspiration, passion & backbone for what was eventually to lie ahead. Jacqui then went on to work at the famous hit making label PWL (Pete Waterman Ltd), where she consulted on various club promotion projects. She was soon offered the position of label assistant at PWL Manchester where Jacqui gained valuable experience learning the ropes of running a record label. After 2 happy years spent at PWL, followed a 10 year stint working at Distinctive (Avex UK) where Jacqui ran the regional radio department, before being promoted to National Radio Promotions masterminding successful radio campaigns and scoops for a whole host of artistes that included Adeva, Terry Hall, Hybrid, The Dub Pistols, iLS, Way Out West, Chris Coco,Todd Terry, as well as the very successful Y4K brand.
Jac Inc. PR continues to work with Distinctive Records and other independent Record Labels, as well as one man operations too. Jacqui has a strong dance/pop background and has now repeated successes from those genres to the world of indie, rock & acoustic artistes. Artistes under the Jac Inc. banner include : Redtrack, iLS, Phil King, Mamas Gun & Johnny Bennett. In a nutshell as long as the music is goodŠthen Jac Inc.PR LOVES You!
David Stark:
The publisher and powerhouse behind SONGLINK, a unique subscription service and magazine that connects songwriters with those seeking songs (on every level), David works at the very heart of the music industry creating connections between publishers, labels, writers, performers, creators and artists representatives.
Kirsty Band:
"After spending her founding years learning the art of branding from FMCG Multinational Procter & Gamble, Kirsty Band has turned her attention to developing artists in the music industry . After gaining experience in music promotion from companies like Curious Generation and the avid Bedford family behind Tony Moore, she established her own promotions company named 'Rough Sketch' hosting live music events at Proud Galleries, The Troubadour and 333 Motherbar. Now Head of Music for Geronimo Inns, she is in the midst of launching a brand new live music venue in Notting HIll called The Elgin, striving to establish a brand that will be recognised for providing some of the best live music nights in London. Recognising the needs of emerging artists to establish themselves in what is becoming a cluttered environment, she's combining her knowledge of branding, marketing and music promotion to help musicians cut through that clutter and be heard. Covering everything from logo development, recognisable equities and stage presentation Rough Sketch Music Consultancy will provide the foundations to a clear identifiable voice."
David Sims:
One of the biggest problems creative artists can face is how best to manage their accounts. The life of a musician/songwriter/producer is often chaotic, financially ill informed and lacking the structure needed to make sure that their cash flow, tax affairs and business plans are adequately thought about and planned for. Whether it's understanding how to become self employed and what those responsibilities are or preparing for the economics of recording music, touring and eventually paying the Taxman (or IRS if you become a Tax Exile in the USA), David Sims vast experience and understanding of the business is second to none.
Brad - UBPics:
The most important single weapon in the armoury of promotion and marketing is a fantastic photograph. As the cliche has it, a picture is worth a thousand words, and a great picture will be the ambassador of an artist throughout their lifetime. Just the right, single/iconic image, can establish exactly who and what an artists is for millions of people around the world. Brad is a gifted and highly dedicated photographer who specialises in live music pictures and has a portfolio of images that capture the unique magic and elusive essence of many amazing artists.
PRS for Music:
The Performing Rights Society, are the company that collects royalties for songwriters all around the world and make sure that there interests and copyrights are protected. Lifting the veil on the inner workings of the collection business, a representative of the PRS will be here to explain what they do and advise people how to become members and the benefits of being part of such a powerful and essential organisation.
James Brister ICMP:
One of the barriers to success is not having access to the sort of knowledge and the kind of people that can help develop the potential and skills of musicians and songwriters. One very important route to fast tracking abilities and "hot housing" talent is through focused educational opportunities and we will have a James Brister from The Institute Of Contemporary Music and Performance in attendance to answer questions and explain about their vast range of part and full time courses that can make a distinct difference in the careers of creatives.
Rosa Martinez:
Currently working with Ticketmaster in charge of developing and managing online partnerships, Rosa's extensive background in the music/entertainment industry is impressive by any ones standards.
She has vast experience of organising and creating synch rights (placing music in ad's, TV shows and movies etc), she understands the intricate and powerful relationship of Brands and Music and has worked in great depth with many companies driving sponsorship deals and finding new income streams for musicians, writers and related business.
All of these incredible guests will be staying around to network and answer your questions afterwards, so make the most of this unique opportunity and join me at The Regal Room on the 12th.

We are now on sale for the BEDFORD SXSW special.
http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/The-Bedford-Present-A-SXSW-Special-tickets/artist/1015950
As you know, this is a very special show that we are putting together in order to raise funds to take The Bedford back to Austin Texas in 2010 where we will put on 3 nights of amazing music to help Bedford artists be seen and heard by the industry, in the best way possible.
SXSW 2009 was a great success and now we have to raise the BAR again, to really deliver something extra special for next year.
It is an expensive and complex operation to get all this together, and I am asking all of you to try and help us somewhere along the line by buying some tickets or passing the flyer and link on to your friends with a little message telling them about us and what we are trying to do ( I will add some text after the flyer that you can copy and paste from) or, if you feel you might be able to sponsor us in someway, then please let me know by emailing
to...@thebedford.co.uk.
Over 7 years of putting on free music, we have managed to share our passion for performance with thousands of artists and tens of thousands of music lovers. This is one event that is crucial and so important to us, and I appreciate, in advance, all the help and support you can offer.
