Have I missed posts to the list, it seems very quiet lately?

I thought I'd mention a hardware-detection script I wrote as a part of
our efforts in refurbishing computers with Xubuntu Linux. The script
should work on other versions of Ubuntu, but may have some issues with
other Debian-based systems. (I did some limited testing on Mint, but
that was several versions ago).

The script produces a PDF on the user's desktop (the user needs to
have sudo access, but don't run the script using sudo, it will
prompt). The PDF includes detailed information about OEM manufacturer,
model, serial number, CPU information (cores, threads, speed), RAM
information, (installed amount, maximum capacity, type), graphics card
information, including VRAM and OpenGL supported (for Steam), drive
information (but at this point just for a single drive), and some
laptop information.

It also produces a barcode near the top of the PDF based on the serial
number of the system if it's an OEM (Dell/HP, etc.) or MAC address
(for non-OEM systems, or systems where the information hasn't been
properly filled out by the OEM). The barcode is handy if you need to
scan systems into a Point Of Sale.

We've run the script on a lot of hardware pre-8th gen i-Series hardware.

I'm not a programmer, and there are some minor issues with the script,
but thinking it might be handy for others out there.

The script is on github: https://github.com/chaslinux/hardware.sh

If you want to know more about the script I've also written a post
about it on my personal web site here:
https://chaslinux.com/2023/02/15/hardware-detection-script-for-buntu-linux-refurbishers/

I hope it's useful to other refurbishers out there.

Cheers,

Charles
