Hi there,
What methods to you all use to remove the asset tags from donated hardware?
We have some folks who are sensitive to removal liquids, we get folks who
cut them selves using razor blades. What clever tools/ideas have you come up
with to get the tags off without totally destroying the hardware?

How about those darn security cables that are stuck to monitors and
desktops? What are your tricks there?

Thanks for any guidance,
Lorraine

Don't some tags respond to the heat of blow dryers?  Have you tried that?

A widget and un-do. Works like a charm.

Nope, haven¹t tried that. Could prove difficult for when we are sorting
outside. I guess I need a quick and easy method!

Sorry, I don't know what you are talking about. Were you making a joke? I am
looking for a real life solution. I have 22 pallets with asset tags and I
would like to get them processed faster than we have been doing without
damaging the hardware. I have 11 more pallets coming in the next two days.

That's no joke. I did 15,000 units this past year. I have 400 machines
that arrive this week. Take a widget and some un-do and each one takes
all of 10 seconds. We have 3 major "take out" contracts so we get the
metal asset tags as well as the stickers. The metal ones are easier to
remove than the stickers - which sometimes require a heat gun.

Okay, I'll bite. What does a widget look like and what is undo?

First, wet it down with 'Goo Off,' let soak one minute. Second, razor
blade in a handle like those you use to scrap stickers off your car
window but go slow and easy; third and last , a little spray cleaner and
steel wool to get the last residue. Three minutes at most.

Lorraine,

Our group uses De-Solv-it (http://www.dtep.com/index.html) which we've found
to be the fastest and safest label remover. We've used Goo-Gone in the
past, but it has a tendency to melt some plastics and remove lettering from
cases. Plus, it really doesn't do a good job of removing tags. If you have
the time, with De-Solv-It, you can spray it on paper or plastic tags and
come back in an hour or so and they'll usually slide loose with your finger.
Metal tags, however, require some kind of tool. Paint scrapers with filed
down edge work pretty good. A razor blade (if you're really careful) or a
heat gun also works. Also, which ever remover you use make sure you clean
the area afterwards with something like 409 or you'll find your computers
with an oily residue left over from the remover.

Good Luck...

Thanks Steve for the info. We don't have room to stage hardware till the tag
slides off, but with a razor blade it may be the right solution for asset
tag removal. Thanks for the clear info.
