I haven't seen much activity on this group recently, so maybe this question is going into the void, but: what are various refurbishers doing about the impending end of Win10 support? More specifically, are you continuing to install Win10 on machines that aren't supported for Win11, or shifting to Linux? Here at ComputerCORE, we're still seeing about 40% of donated computers that don't qualify for Win11, and it's time for us to start deciding what to do.

Option 1: continue installing Win10 up to the last moment. Pro: gives people a mainstream computer that will still be viable for at least a year or so. Con: only a temporary solution to their long-term computing needs.

Option 2: Start installing Linux now. Pro: modern powerful OS with no expiration date. Con: the community we serve is by definition not very computer-literate, and Linux is not mainstream (yet -- we'll see what happens after October).

Thoughts?

Thanks for asking, Lonnie -- and others.  I'm installing Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon on Windows 10 computers. I used to install Linux Mint 22.1 xfce (the lightweight dessktop), but I've found that the xfce desktop has some annoying wifi bugs.   I still love xfce -- but will wait until they fix the wifi bugs before I start installing it again.

At my public library job, we have a lot of community members with Windows 10 laptops who seek guidance on what to do when Windows 10 expires. I'm lucky that I'm able to do Linux installs as part of my public library job.  I would do this anyway in my free time, but it's nice of my supervisor to allow me to do this during my work day. For every Linux install I do, I get a dose of endorphins. It's good for my health.

Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon will run well on Core2Duo computers -- so you can rescue computers from as far back as 2008 to give them a new life.

       Linux loves you.
